SPICE OF LIFE :: FLIP GRATER + ADI DICK :: 13/12/08

We welcome to our last gig of the year the amazing Adi Dick. Adi first came to prominence due to his involvement in the formidable Fly My Pretties project, but this was soon eclipsed by his excellent debut album “Our Place”, that came out on LOOP last year. You can check him out at www.myspace.com/adidick.

Also playing is the lovely Flip Grater, bringing an end to a rambling tour through Europe that has taken in Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen and more. Along the way she has been collecting recipes for her next cookbook, so maybe bring some down to the gig to submit? More info on her at www.myspace.com/flipgrater.

The Spice of Life is an intimate room, downstairs from a pub just off Charring Cross Road, so perfectly placed to come for a quiet drink or six at the end of a busy day Xmas shopping!

There are still some credit crunch busting tickets for £4 +b/f at Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100), otherwise it will be £6 on the door.

Since their inaugural show at The Gathering back in 1997, Pitch Black have blazed a trail of warped woofers and twisted tweeters worldwide. They make a welcome return to London for a one off show this summer, in between supporting the Easy Dub All Stars in Croatia and representing NZ at an international film festival in Poland. Supporting them on the night is the equally unclassifiable Tom Cosm and DJ Horace.

If you want to check out some of their newer material, you can download for FREE two live tracks from their last album from www.pitchblack.co.nz/livetrack.

As the more astute of you may already know, he will be back later this year, as Supergroove have been booked to play Toast on September 27th – yes, that’s right, the ‘Groove will be in the UK, playing their first ever northern hemisphere show, and their only show outside of Australasia this year. 12 ACKLAM ROAD :: SCRIBE :: 13/06/08

A last minute schedule change has meant that Scribe’s show has moved not only date but venue: he will now be playing at 12 Acklam Road on Saturday 14th June. All original tickets are still valid, but if you bought a ticket and cannot make the show, please contact the original ticketing agent to arrange a refund.

If you aren’t familiar with him, Scribble first became widely known thanks to his excellent verses on the stand out tracks of P-Money’s debut album, “”Remember?” and “Scribe 2001”. He then smashed it with his debut single, the amazing “Stand Up”, which is still the longest running No 1 in NZ music history. No one was surprised then when “The Crusader” album went on to be one of the fastest selling albums of 2003, selling 8,000 copies in the first few hours of release, and then tripling that in the next few days. The next single, “Not Many – The Remix” confirmed his genius, and found him success over the Tasman, where the Aussies embraced him with a passion, sending him into the charts and buying over 50,000 copies of the album.

Last year saw the release of his long awaited follow up, “Rhyme Book”. It notably features a collaboration with New York hip hop artist Talib Kweli (of Reflection Eternal and Black Star fame) on the track “Be Alright” as well as the amazing “Say It Again” which features Scribe’s cousin Tyra Hammond of Opensouls and Tornados fame. You can check out these tracks and others at www.myspace.com/scribedirtyrecords.

Assisted by DJ D Form, Scribe will be joined on stage (c9pm) by Tyra, who will also perform a solo live set. DJing will be “New Zealand’s ambassador to Ireland”, the legendarily mischievous Mikki Dee, LOOP’s Adi Dick plus a last minute addition in the form of Mr Nick Lloyd.

Tickets: £12 +b/f from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) or £15 on the door.

From 7pm til 2.30am

ELECTRIC BALLROOM :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 25/06/08

The mighty Seeds should need little introduction by now: over the last ten years they have released a trio of stellar albums, and played all round the globe, entertaining us with their excellent fusion of dub, reggae, funk and soul.

They have a new album, entitled Solid Ground, set for release in August this year on Berlin’s esteemed Sonar Kollektiv, and are coming back to London to play a small and nearly sold out gig at Camden’s excellent Electric Ballroom, with support from the dubtastic International Observer and Special Needs’ Cam Diggy.

Tickets: £13.50 + b/f from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) or £20 on the door.

CARGO :: PITCH BLACK :: 24/07/08

Pitch Black have blazed a trail of warped woofers and twisted tweeters since their debut at The Gathering back in 1997. Despite being one of the pioneers of live electronica in NZ, they haven’t rested on their laurels, but keep on adding new elements to their bass heavy, echo laden sound – their last album “Rude Mechanicals” featured more genres than is supposedly healthy. You can download for FREE live versions of two tracks off the album from www.pitchblack.co.nz/livetrack.

They make a welcome return to London for a one off show this summer, in between supporting the Easy Dub All Stars in Croatia and repping NZ at an international film festival in Poland. Last year’s Cargo session sold out so …. get in! Supporting them is the equally unclassifiable Tom Cosm and other guests tba.

Advance tickets: £9 from Ticketweb (08700 600 100)

From 7pm til 1am
On: 83 Rivington Street, EC2A 3AY
Nearest tubes: Liverpool Street or Old Street

COMPETITION :: VERSION EXCURSION T-SHIRTS

Version Excursion is a new clothing label for music lovers, DJs and Kiwis with good taste! The first collection is inspired by reggae music, exploring the different styles of reggae, the terms, the artwork and some of the people who have influence the culture. The Collection will on display at the Milkbar from June 19th to July 31st: you can view the T-shirts and listen to the musical influences though Sony’s ‘Wireless’ Walkmans while chilling out in Soho’s best spot for coffee (brought to you by Flat White of course).

To launch the collection, Heavy J will be spinning reggae classics and more from 6 til 9pm on June 19th at The Milkbar, 3 Bateman St, W1D 4AG, which you are all invited to. But best of all, they have given us 2 T-shirts to give away to whoever can tell us where Bob Marley played in Auckland back in 1979: email us at kiaora@spacific.net by June 9th with your answer. In the meantime, check out www.myspace.com/versionexcursions.

NEW ZEALAND MUSIC MONTH GIGS

With the assistance of the New Zealand Music Commission, we are proud to present a series of FREE concerts this May for your listening/partying pleasure:

MILK BAR :: ADI DICK :: 01/05/08

Adi Dick’s album, “Our Place” was one of the best releases in 2007 – a perfect blend of soul, funk, reggae and electronica, all welded together with original songs and an amazing voice. His live set is equally excellent, and it is an honour to have him open our series of events, as well as launch the new Flat White owned café, The Milk Bar at 3 Bateman Street in Soho. This event will run from 6.30 til 9pm only, and thanks go to Lion Nathan for their support.

BIG CHILL HOUSE :: JAYSON NORRIS, PRECIOUS CLARK + LEIGH FRANKLIN :: 06/05/08

Jayson Norris needs little introduction these days – he has built his fanbase on the strength of his excellent live set and catchy songs. Supporting him on the night are two up and coming London based singers – Precious Clark oozes South Pacific soul, while Leigh Franklin seems to be channeling Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones.

BIG CHILL HOUSE :: BRUCE CONLON, THE THIN MEN + DAVE :: 20/05/08

Bruce Conlon found fame as frontman for Eight, and since then has been beavering away on his debut solo album, “Audience of One”, due out in NZ this May. He is ably supported by Gothic country rockers The Thin Men, and the legendary Dave.

CARGO :: RAGAMUFFIN CHILDREN, THE O’LOVELYS + THE BASSBIN KID :: 26/05/08

Our final installment falls on the Bank Holiday Monday, so we have arranged for sunshine all day, and a Kiwi flavoured BBQ in the yard! Outdoor entertainment comes from The Bassbin Kid and his wheelie bin soundsystem, while indoors Christchurch is providing us with two up and coming talents, the folksy Ragamuffin Children and the seemingly unclassifiable O’Lovelys.

More information on all these shows, and on the acts themselves, can be found at www.spaciific.net.

**PLEASE NOTE ALL THESE GIGS ARE FREE**

*******************************************************************************************
NEW ZEALAND MUSIC MONTH T-SHIRTS

To help pay for the events above, we have been given permission to print up a very limited run of London edition NZ Music Month T-shirts. You can check out the design on the front page of www.spacific.net: they will be for sale for £15 at Flat White, 17 Berwick Street, Soho or Rough Trade, Dray Walk, off Brick Lane. They will also be on sale at all the gigs we are running in May, or if you can’t get out of the house, we can post them to you – please email kiaora@spacific.net to arrange this.

Rough Trade are also celebrating NZ Music Month by giving over one of their display stands to Kiwi music for the whole of May, thanks to the persuasive powers of Margot, who works there. So while buying a t-shirt, why not pick up some Kiwi classics as well!

Or at least tell your friends who live in those cities to go along! For more info, check www.myspace.com/opshop.

Their northern hemispheric debut dropped yesterday, so if you don’t have any of their albums, then please pop into HMV, Zavvi or your local independent store and pick up a copy. Called, deep breath, “I went to this party and there were 88 Guards with Guns”, it collates all the best tracks from their two NZ albums, “The 88” and “The Guards Themselves”.

If you can’t make the show, and are a fan, then they will be playing on KISS FM on Tuesday 27th May at some point in the evening. Check www.minuit.co.nz for more info.

CLOCKWORK :: MINUIT :: 29/05/08

The pesky breakbeat banditos fly back to Europe for a whirlwind tour to launch their Northern Hemisphere debut, “I went to this party and there were 88 Guards with Guns”, which features the finest tracks from their two original albums. Having beaten the Pet Shop Boys to win a Pixel Award for Best Music Website, and then won a similar gong at SXSW in Texas recently, the Minuit kids are kinda hoping their album will perform in a similar manner. Given the airplay they have been getting from Annie Mac and Annie Nightingale on Radio One, Jay Cunning on KISS and Rennie Pilgrem on Galaxy, they should hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

With support from Nelson’s finest, DJ FunknSloCuts and Demus. Please note that Clockwork is a very small venue, so you will need to move fast if you want to see them.

Tickets: £8 +b/f from Ticketweb (08700 600 100) or £12 on the door.

ELECTRIC BALLROOM :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 25/06/08

Apologies but we discovered too late on that the Ticketmaster link we sent in last month’s emailout meant you could end up paying more money for your Black Seeds tickets than if you went to Ticketweb for example. We are dedicated to keeping ticket prices as low as they can be, especially in these crazy times.

Anyways, the good news is that the Seeds are coming back, and with a new album too. Their fourth release is scheduled to hit the streets early August, but hopefully there will be some sneaky previews available at this gig.

12 ACKLAM ROAD :: HOLLIE SMITH :: 14/04/08

Hollie Smith burst onto the NZ music scene with 2006’s blockbuster track, “Bathe in the River”, the lead song in the film No.2. Since then the press appointed “Kiwi soul sister” has seen her debut album, “Long Player” sell over 30,000 copies back in NZ, been awarded “Best Female Solo Artist,” “Breakthrough Artist of the Year,” “Best Aotearoa Roots Album” and “Best Producer” at the 2007 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, and to top it all off, been signed by EMI/Blue Note Records offshoot, Manhattan, for release in the US and the rest of the world.

As a result, this, her debut UK appearance, will probably be one of the last times to be able to see her in such an intimate environment, as bigger things surely beckon.
