BIG CHILL BAR :: IKE :: 04/10/06

Isaac Tucker aka Ike first made a name for himself back home as part of New Loungehead, then went on to make drum’n’bass as Cuba & Gizmo, before settling down into his current role as drummer for cult punk funksters Spektrum (whose “Kinda New” was the dancefloor hit of 2005). In his spare time he is also does some remix work under the Ithz moniker, and his version of Pitch Black’s “Freefall” is one of the highlights of their new remix collection. Spektrum’s new album is due out early November and this night will be a good opportunity to hear some of the tunes in advance.

Our favourite troubadour returns to tha ‘hood to support his good friend Rietta Austin, whose amazingly powerful voice has led to comparisons to a white Aretha Franklin or a young Jocelyn Brown. Her debut album is dropping soon on Halo Records, but in the meantime you can check her out at www.myspace.com/riettaaustin.

Jayson hopefully needs no introduction now, but for those who haven’t seen his live show yet, he manages to combine the spirit of early Elvis with the voice of Jack Johnson. His website is www.jaysonnorris.com.

CARGO :: SPACIFIC’S 5TH BIRTHDAY PARTY :: 23/08/06

Five years ago Spacific was “born” and to celebrate, we are returning to where it all began and throwing a free party.

We have asked our favourite DJs and artists to come down and play their favourite homegrown sounds on the night. Inside in the bar, it will be downbeats galore while outside in the yard, the barbeques will be sizzling with Kiwi style flavours as special guests (who we can’t list here but will post soon on the Cargo website) provide acoustic entertainment for y’all.

We know it is a school night but hope that some of you will come down and celebrate five years of putting on New Zealand music events in London and Edinburgh with us – we wouldn’t still be here if it wasn’t for you so ….

From 7pm til 1am
At Cargo, 81 Rivington Street, London EC2A 3HY
Nearest tubes: Old Street or Liverpool Street
Website: http://www.cargo-london.com

*******************************************************************************************
KOKO :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 04/09/06

Their brand new album went straight into the NZ Charts at Number 1 and quite rightly too: carrying on where “On the Sun” left off, “Into the Dojo” fuses reggae, funk, afrobeat, blues and dub together into the unique Seeds sound. Please don’t go ordering the album from Smoke CDs or any other NZ store – it will be available from August 21st from Flat White in Soho.

The boys kick off their European tour with a show at one of our favourite London venues, KOKO, where we put on Fat Freddy’s last year. On the night they will be supported by Bristol’s Babyhead, who fuse ska and hip-hop to great effect, and DJ Mike Fabulous. Please note that nearly half the tickets for this show have sold already and we are not sure if we will be able to do another date yet.

Tickets: £13 +b/f from Ticketweb (08700 600 100 or http://tinyurl.com/nnxcn)

THE CORONET :: KATCHAFIRE :: 13/07/06

Katchafire are undoubtably one of the most popular reggae bands in the South Pacific region. Their debut albums, Revival and Slow Burning, have both sold over 40,000 copies back home and have recently been picked up by reggae fans in Hawaii and on the west coast of America, taking them to the top of the charts there.

Their latest project is a collection of remixes, featuring versions by The Mad Professor, Pitch Black, Chong Nee and many more. That CD, Homegrown Dub, will be available on the night, as will a selection of tour T-Shirts. Spinning classic reggae tunes before and after will be DJ Killamanraro.

The Coronet is a wonderfully refurbished old theatre right at the heart of Elephant and Castle, and thankfully about 2 minutes walk from the tube station. Not only does the tube run until 12.15 on both Bakerloo and Northern Lines, but there are night buses from just outside the venue that go all over London.

Please note the band will go onstage at 9pm and are likely to play until 11.45pm.

CARGO :: SPACIFIC’S 5TH BIRTHDAY PARTY :: 23/08/06

Amazingly enough this date marks the 5th anniversary of our first ever shows: Thursday 23rd August 2001 saw Pitch Black and Max Maxwell playing live, and FreQ Nasty and Automattic DJing at a very hot, sweaty and crammed Cargo, followed by a free after hours house session at nearby Plastic People, with the help of Phully and Dean Webb. If you had told us then that we would still be doing this now, we would all have laughed but ……….

Our headliner for this event has disappeared on us, so we still aren’t sure what exactly is going to happen on the night yet, but hope to pull something fun and funky out the hat! More info soon.

NEIGHBOURHOOD :: ANIKA MOA + JAYSON NORRIS :: 18/05/06

Together with the nice people at Neighbourhood, we are co-promoting a new monthly that will focus on showcasing the talent of London based expat acts. If you are interested in playing please email us at kiaora@spacific.net.

For our first night we have a very special guest, Anika Moa, who burst onto the New Zealand music scene 4 years ago with the double-platinum album ‘Thinking Room’. Her new album, “Stolen Hill”, is more raw and earthy than it’s predecessor, focusing on more weightier topics than the standard singer/songwriter ruminations on love and life. She will be onstage around 9.15pm.

Jayson Norris was the surprise hit of our Waitangi Day event this year. A singer-songwriter in the mold of Ben Harper, his soulful Pacific roots performances, combining masterful guitar playing and a mesmerizing earthy voice, have impressed crowds all over London. He has just finished recording his debut album “A Basket Full …”, tracks from which you can check out at http://www.myspace.com/jaysonnorris.

ISLINGTON ACADEMY :: THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION :: 01/06/06

Having received massive critical acclaim in New Zealand in recent times, Wellington indie rockers The Phoenix Foundation come to London for the first time to perform a one-off show at Islington Academy on Thursday 1st June.

With an eclectic sound that traverses many genres including psychedelic indie pop/rock, alt country, and acoustic electro folk, The Phoenix Foundation first made an impact with the release of their critically acclaimed debut album “Horsepower” in 2003. But it was the release of last year’s gold selling album “Pegasus” that kicked them into the big time. “Pegasus” garnered stunning reviews, was in most critics’ ‘Top albums of the year’ lists and was nominated for Best Album at the 2005 NZ Music Awards.

Renowned for their strong live show, The Phoenix Foundation have played alongside the likes of the Finn Brothers, Calexico and Evan Dando, as well as playing headline slots at New Zealand’s biggest festivals.

The band travel to London en route to the US, where they are working with a New York-based management company and will be playing shows in Los Angeles and New York.

For more information (and free downloads!), please check http://www.myspace.com/thephoenixfoundationnz.

ISLINGTON ACADEMY :: THE PHOENIX FOUNDATION :: 01/06/06

Wellington’s The Phoenix Foundation bring their wonderfully lush and eclectic sound to London en route to a tour of the US of A.

The self described “heavy folk rockin wheat free mutha fxxxxxs” first made a splash with 2002’s “Horsepower” album, which came out on Capitol Recordings and was voted album of the year by nzmusic.com and the listener. But it was last year’s “Pegasus” that has kicked them into the big time, swiftly going gold back home as well as garnering critical acclaim.

Renowned for their strong live show, The Phoenix Foundation have played with the likes of the Finn Brothers, Calexico, SJD, Evan Dando and Cortina and play regular slots at some of New Zealand’s biggest festivals including The Big Day Out in 2005.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

All of us here at Spacific HQ wish you the very best for 2006. Already it is looking like being another great year for New Zealand music, with a number of bands scheduled to come over, some for the first time. We can’t release any details yet, but rest assured we will let you know as soon as things are confirmed.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in 2005. From Scribe’s phenomenal Forum show to Shapeshifter’s devastating debut at Neighbourhood, last year was all about top quality New Zealand acts making their mark in London. And all, at the end of the day, thanks to you for your participation. Here’s to more great shows …

BIG CHILL BAR :: AJAX :: 01/02/06

What better way to blow away the winter cobwebs than a set from the master of funk: DJ Ajax, head honcho at Funk Inc and host of Super 80’s. We will also be celebrating one year of Big Chill Bar sessions, so hopefully can arrange some drinks specials with the management.

CARGO :: WAITANGI DAY :: 05/02/06

As you all know Waitangi Day is on the 6th, but since that is a Monday we thought you would all prefer to commemorate it on the Sunday instead – not totally correct, we know, but if we were being cheeky we would point out that, from 12pm onwards, it is the 6th in New Zealand due to the time difference!

Unfortunately no “big name” stars are over from New Zealand this February (understandably given how cold it is here), so our event will feature an array of locally based expat talent instead: live reggae and hip hop from The Eskimo Squad, soulful Pacific roots from Jayson Norris and a performance of spoken word by Sistar Spacific (to find out more on any of these artists, please visit our website). DJs will be the fabulously funky and electic Ms Mill, former Matterhorn resident and mammoth beats merchant Vee plus special guests. Also, the London Maori club, Ngati Ranana will be performing at around 6pm.

As usual, the Cargo Street Kitchen will be cooking up local delicacies – green lipped mussels, lamb burgers, kumara chips etc.

BIG CHILL BAR :: PACIFIC HEIGHTS :: 07/12/05

Pacific Heights is the solo project of Devin Abrams, frontman for Shapeshifter. He burst onto the scene with the unimaginatively named but incredibly sublime “Pacific Heights EP” back in 2002, which featured the jaw droppingly awesome track, “Lavenia”. Swiftly followed by his “Frozen Fears” album the next year, the Pacific Heights sound is all about lush string arrangements and warm, rolling basslines, combined with the sort of breakbeat experimentation one would normally associate with Blame or LTJ Bukem. Fittingly, Blame stepped up last year for the remix project “Borne Together”, which featured re-rubs of tracks from “Frozen Fears” by local and international artists.
