Nick’s “day job” is saxophonist for Supergroove, but he also spins great tunes, and so we feel very lucky to have him come along and play for us this month. As the more astute of you may already know, he will be back later this year, as Supergroove have been booked to play Toast on September 27th – yes, that’s right, the ‘Groove will be in the UK, playing their first ever northern hemisphere show, and their only show outside of Australasia this year. 12 ACKLAM ROAD :: SCRIBE :: 13/06/08
A last minute schedule change has meant that Scribe’s show has moved not only date but venue: he will now be playing at 12 Acklam Road on Saturday 14th June. All original tickets are still valid, but if you bought a ticket and cannot make the show, please contact the original ticketing agent to arrange a refund.
If you aren’t familiar with him, Scribble first became widely known thanks to his excellent verses on the stand out tracks of P-Money’s debut album, “”Remember?” and “Scribe 2001”. He then smashed it with his debut single, the amazing “Stand Up”, which is still the longest running No 1 in NZ music history. No one was surprised then when “The Crusader” album went on to be one of the fastest selling albums of 2003, selling 8,000 copies in the first few hours of release, and then tripling that in the next few days. The next single, “Not Many – The Remix” confirmed his genius, and found him success over the Tasman, where the Aussies embraced him with a passion, sending him into the charts and buying over 50,000 copies of the album.
Last year saw the release of his long awaited follow up, “Rhyme Book”. It notably features a collaboration with New York hip hop artist Talib Kweli (of Reflection Eternal and Black Star fame) on the track “Be Alright” as well as the amazing “Say It Again” which features Scribe’s cousin Tyra Hammond of Opensouls and Tornados fame. Assisted by DJ D Form, Scribe will be joined on stage (c9pm) by Tyra, who will also perform a solo live set. DJing will be “New Zealand’s ambassador to Ireland”, the legendarily mischievous Mikki Dee, LOOP’s Adi Dick plus a last minute addition in the form of Mr Nick Lloyd.

As some of you may know, Opshop had a few problems getting into the country last month due to visa irregularities (the naughty boys!). Thankfully the nice people at Air New Zealand have come to the rescue and they will finally be able to play their London show this month – they are now playing in the big room, so plenty of extra tickets are available.

ELECTRIC BALLROOM :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 25/06/08
The mighty Seeds should need little introduction by now: over the last ten years they have released a trio of stellar albums, and played all round the globe, entertaining us with their excellent fusion of dub, reggae, funk and soul.
They have a new album, entitled Solid Ground, set for release in August this year on Berlin’s esteemed Sonar Kollektiv, and are coming back to London to play a small and nearly sold out gig at Camden’s excellent Electric Ballroom, with support from the dubtastic International Observer and Special Needs’ Cam Diggy.

CARGO :: PITCH BLACK :: 24/07/08
Pitch Black have blazed a trail of warped woofers and twisted tweeters since their debut at The Gathering back in 1997. Despite being one of the pioneers of live electronica in NZ, they haven’t rested on their laurels, but keep on adding new elements to their bass heavy, echo laden sound – their last album “Rude Mechanicals” featured more genres than is supposedly healthy. They make a welcome return to London for a one off show this summer, in between supporting the Easy Dub All Stars in Croatia and repping NZ at an international film festival in Poland. COMPETITION :: VERSION EXCURSION T-SHIRTS
Version Excursion is a new clothing label for music lovers, DJs and Kiwis with good taste! The first collection is inspired by reggae music, exploring the different styles of reggae, the terms, the artwork and some of the people who have influence the culture. The Collection will on display at the Milkbar from June 19th to July 31st: you can view the T-shirts and listen to the musical influences though Sony’s ‘Wireless’ Walkmans while chilling out in Soho’s best spot for coffee (brought to you by Flat White of course).
