THE VIBE BAR :: ANNA CODDINGTON, STINKY JIM + MORE :: 29/08/09

The final addition to NZLDN at Brick Lane’s Vibe Bar is the amazing Anna Coddington. Until recently she was perhaps best known for work with Bic Runga and Anika Moa, but she finally released a solo album last year, the sublime “The Lake”, and since then her star has been on the ascendant. You can check her out at myspace.com/annacoddington.

She will be playing outside in the Courtyard, joining Jayson Norris, Blair Jollands and Huia. The music will start there at 12, and finish at 7ish, with DJs playing in between the bands, and the multi talented Mr Mikki Dee compering.

The music starts upstairs at 7, with live sets from Davey Cain, Agent, Lotus Mason, Jayson Norris and Sheldon Woolright from Blindspott with his new band I Am Giant (www.myspace.com/iamgiantband).

Downstairs will be DJs Nic D and Cam Diggy plus bFM resident and head honcho of Round Trip Mars, Stinky Jim, with support from the ubiquitous and unique Mikki Dee, playing an AV/DJ set.

The whole day is brought to you courtesy of Steinglager Pure, with entry being free until 7pm, then it will be £4 on the door.

From 12pm til 1am
At: The Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL
Nearest Tubes: Aldgate East or Liverpool St

For a snapshot of what he is playing these days, check his excellent blog at stinkinc.blogspot.com.

MIXTAPE COMPETITION :: MIKKI DEE

New Zealand doesn’t have an Ambassador to Ireland but it does have the next best thing: Serato scratchmeister Mikki Dee. Hailing from Island Bay, Mr Dee has been entertaining the Irish for over 8 years with his turntable, mic and recently added video mixing skills. Known for a broad selection of music, his latest mix “123 Go” features bits of Flight of The Conchords, Common, Beenie Man, The Black Seeds and Marvin Gaye and that’s just the first 5 minutes!

We have 5 copies to give away to the first people to email us at kiaora@spacific.net. More info on the young man can be found at http://tinyurl.com/mikkidee.

*******************************************************************************************
DVD COMPETITION :: THE ADVENTURER

Do you remember the TV series “The Adventurer”? Shown in NZ back in the late ‘80s it tells the story of Jack Vincent, an aristocratic smuggler caught and transported to a penal colony on Norfolk Island, and featured a young Temuera Morrison as well as breathtaking natural sceneries, highly authentic sets and thrilling storylines.

The lovely people (well, person) at Network DVD have given us 3 copies to give away to the first people to tell us the name of the actor who plays Jack Vincent. Answers, as always, to kiaora@spacific.net by June 22nd please. (PS. If you don’t win, you can buy them from http://tinyurl.com/kl6hdl)

THE VIBE BAR :: A LOW HUM :: 23/05/09

To celebrate New Zealand Music Month, we are happy to announce a collaboration with the wonderful A Low Hum posse, the people behind the phenomenally successful Camp A Low Hum festival that occurs every year in February around Waitangi weekend.

They have programmed the upstairs Live room at The Vibe Bar: playing on the night will be young punks Bang Bang Eche, eighties avenger Disasteradio and the blisteringly beautiful Batrider plus special guests to be announced nearer the time.

Downstairs will be all about the good times grooves as DJ’s Ajax, Tim Squier and Regan go from dub to disco and beyond, taking in whatever they can find in the box as they go. Plus a very special set from expat DJericho, who is launching his debut release, a fusion of electronic and acoustic instruments with a down-tempo feel entitled The Whitechapel EP, that weekend.

Entry: £4 on the door.

TOAST FESTIVAL OFFER

Toast Festival has gone back outdoors to Clapham Common this year, and thankfully is under new, independent ownership too, so should be back to its former glory. It’s on June 27th, Dave Dobbyn is headlining, there will be international polo matches (really!) plus homegrown food and wine, and since all the rain will be falling on Glastonbury, it should be sunny too!

The nice people now running it have offered us 3 pairs of tickets: these are available to whoever emails us at kiaora@spacific.net to tell us where Toast is this year. We will email the winners on Monday 11th May, but don’t panic if you don’t win, as they have also offered 10% off tickets if you quote SPACIFIC1 or 4 tickets for the price of 3 if you quote SPACIFIC4. More info at toastfestivals.co.uk.

HMV FORUM :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 22/05/09

We are super stoked to add P-Money to the line up for Shapeshifter’s only London show this year – DJ extraordinaire, creator of four solo albums, producer of Scribe’s “Crusader”, co-owner of Auckland’s Dirty Records, TV show host, Songwriter of the Year (2004 NZMA) – there seemingly isn’t much that Mr Money hasn’t done in the music biz. His last single, “Everything” featuring Vince Harder, was one of the biggest selling tunes of the year in NZ and Australia, and is now gaining traction over these sides with radio plays by Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and others. Check out this and more at www.myspace.com/pmoneymusic.

But of course, this show isn’t about him – it is about the mighty Shapeshifter, the hottest live drum and bass act in the southern hemisphere, if not the world. They are currently beavering away in the studio, writing their fourth album, which is due for release later this year, so expect new tunes as well as the old classics.

We have been granted a late license so will be running the after party at the venue til 12.30 at least. Advance tickets are available for £17.50 +b/f from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) or it will be £22 on the door.

CARGO :: WAITANGI DAY :: 05/02/09

Hopefully it will have finished snowing by Thursday, so that we can commemorate Waitangi Day without too much of a hitch.

The event starts at 5pm with reggae music from DJ Horace, followed by a performance by the London Maori club, Ngati Ranana at 7.30pm. After them we have live sets from London legend Jayson Norris and The Thin Men, as well as music from DJs Ears and Ajax.

The Cargo kitchen will, as usual, be rustling up Kiwi style treats in the restaurant and quality New Zealand lager will be flowing from behind the bar – we should have Mac’s Gold, Speights and, if we are lucky, some of the new Steinlager pure in stock.

Thanks to the generosity of Mac’s Gold and Lion Nathan, the event will be free all night. We also would like to thank InLondon Magazine (inlondon.com) and Kea for their very welcome support.

From 5pm til 1am
On: 83 Rivington Street, EC2A 3AY

ISLINGTON ACADEMY :: ELEMENO P :: 02/04/09

Power pop punksters Elemeno P burst onto the music scene back in 2003 with their “Love and Disrespect” album, whose simple guitar driven pop songs with big choruses pushed them to sales of over 45,000 albums in NZ alone. They built on this success with 2005’s “Trouble in Paradise”, which spawned hit singles, “One Left Standing” and “Burn” and helped them to win Best Group at the NZ Music Awards that year.

Their third, self titled, album came out last year, with the first single “Baby Come On” going straight into the top ten. You can check out videos and new songs via the links at www.elemenop.com.

They will be supported on the night by I Am Giant, the new band from Shelton Woolwright, formerly of Blindspott. You can check his new tunes out at www.myspace.com/iamgiantband.

SPICE OF LIFE :: FLIP GRATER + ADI DICK :: 13/12/08

We welcome to our last gig of the year the amazing Adi Dick. Adi first came to prominence due to his involvement in the formidable Fly My Pretties project, but this was soon eclipsed by his excellent debut album “Our Place”, that came out on LOOP last year. You can check him out at www.myspace.com/adidick.

Also playing is the lovely Flip Grater, bringing an end to a rambling tour through Europe that has taken in Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen and more. Along the way she has been collecting recipes for her next cookbook, so maybe bring some down to the gig to submit? More info on her at www.myspace.com/flipgrater.

The Spice of Life is an intimate room, downstairs from a pub just off Charring Cross Road, so perfectly placed to come for a quiet drink or six at the end of a busy day Xmas shopping!
