The former tour DJ for The Dirty Beatniks and rapper Silver Bullet has been making a name for himself in London for quite some time now with his solo releases on Exceptional and more recently with Steve Harris as Atlantic Conveyor. His latest single, “Five Day Night” features Dallas from Fat Freddys Drop as well as sterling remixes from both the Drop and Brad Baloo (The Nextmen).

CARGO :: BBQ SESSIONS:: 21/08/05

For this Sunday session we are very proud to present a musical smorgasbord for your pleasure.

Our “headline” act is an acoustic set by the sensation of 2004, Fly My Pretties. Main man Barnaby Weir and friends will perform a few numbers from their “Live At Bats” album and maybe even preview some newer material if we are lucky. Please note that due to some members of the ensemble being on tour or back home, this will not be a full Fly My Pretties set.

Barnaby will also be playing some music under his other guise, the fabulously funky Flash Harry and we have another Black Seed (and Flight of the Conchord’s maestro) Bret Mckenzie showcasing his own side project, The Video Kid. Last not but not least, there will be poetry and performance from Sistar Spacific and friends. Manning the decks in and around these performances will be the ever funky and eclectic Ms Mill, the wonderfully deranged Mikey Ray and the all encompassing LOOP soundsystem.

Cargo chefs will be cooking Kiwi delicacies outside on the barbie – not sure exactly what yet but green lipped mussels, lamb cutlets and other delights were mentioned.

Confirming their heavyweight status, Freddys have managed to persuade German legends Jazzanova to come and support them with DJ sets before and after their show.

COMMENT :: BOOKING FEES

We received several emails complaining about the high booking fees seetickets.com charged for the Scribe show. We agree that £2.20 is a very high price to charge but were tied to using The Forum’s ticketing agents by the hire contract.

For The Black Seeds and Fat Freddys Drop shows we will be using Ticketweb. They charge £1.20 for venue pick up and £2.70 if you have the ticket posted to you. To speed up venue pick up’s and thus reduce queues, for every 150 of you who buy “will call” tickets, we will hire an extra person to give you your tickets on the door. Hopefully this means we can get everyone in quickly and painlessly.

We have also printed out proper tickets and will be selling them at our Big Chill Bar sessions on 8th June and 13th July, and at the ToastLife Festival on Clapham Common on 11th June, where we will be running a CD stall. These direct sales will have NO commission or booking fee, but will be cash only.

Everything is hotting up nicely for our Waitangi Day event this coming Sunday. The Cargo chefs have created a special menu for the day featuring roast lamb in pitta bread with tomatillo salsa & salad; green lip mussels with sweet chilli sauce & garlic crumb; and sweet potato fries (the nearest they can do to kumara chips in this country!). Ingredients: 50ml 42 Below Passionfruit Vodka, 10mls Passover Slivovitz (12 year old plum brandy 70% A.B.V.), dash passionfruit syrup, 1 fresh lime (cut into wedges), 3 barspoons raw sugar
Glass: Collins/Sling
Method: Muddle sugar, syrup and lime. Add crushed ice to top. Pour vodka then brandy over ice. Stir well and top with crushed ice.

A very late, but heartfelt, Happy New Year to you all. We hope you have had a cracking festive season, either back home or here in winter wonderland!

2005 is looking like it will be a corker of a year: both Fat Freddy’s Drop and Salmonella Dub are scheduled to return, plus, fingers crossed, The Black Seeds will make their European debut sometime this summer. Other bands talking about coming over include Katchafire, Minuit, Pitch Black and Dimmer. We will of course keep you informed of things as and when they get confirmed. Ingredients: 50 ml 42 Below Vodka, 20 ml Rose petal sirop, 1 piece of lemongrass, 6-7 fresh mint leaves, 1.5 barspoon of caster sugar
Glass: Highball
Method: muddle shredded piece(small stem) of lemongrass with sugar and mint, add ice, vodka and rose petal sirop, shake n strain into glass with ice, top with soda
Garnish: 3 strips of lemongrass, a sprig of mint

Ingredients: 2 litres 42 Below, 2 litres apple juice, 500 mls pineapple juice, 10 San Pellegrino Limonata, 30mls lemon juice, 30mls lime juice, wedges of orange and lemon, about 20 mint sprigs
Glass: Mixing bowl
Method: Mix vodka, juices and citrus together and stir. Add the San Pellegrino Limonata, then add ice and stir again. Add mint sprigs just before serving.

A double whammy for you this month: not only the London debut of the prolific producer The Nomad but also a live PA by Christchuch born, Bristol based MC Tali.
The Nomad has been releasing quality dub influenced tracks since 1998, and has worked with Salmonella Dub, Fat Freddys Drop, OG, and Pepsi of Pepsi & Shirley (Wham’s old backing singers!). His live set is a journey through the genres (not as naff as it sounds … honest!), stepping up from deep dubs to bass heavy breakbeats. For more info, check www.thenomad.co.nz.

Ingredients: 50mls 42 Below Pure Vodka, Several thin pieces of kiwifruit and a dash of sugar syrup
Glass: Martini
Method: Cut several very fine strips of fruit, and try to catch the juices in a stainless shaker, add sugar and muddle. Add 42 Below Pure Vodka. Shake well with ice. Double strain mixture into a chilled martini glass.
