THE CORONET :: KATCHAFIRE :: 07/07/07

Ever since their debut single “Giddy Up” dropped back in 2003, Katchafire have gone from strength to strength, with both “Slow Burning” and “Revival” selling over 30,000 copies each in New Zealand and 10,000 in Hawaii, of all places!

Their third and latest album is due for release very soon, but unfortunately they won’t be bringing any copies over with them this time  However they are sure to be playing some of the new tracks at this gig.

The band have earned the well deserved title of hardest working band in NZ due to their relentless touring schedule – no pub is too small, no town too far away for the brothers of the fire to grace with their skanking rhythms and fat basslines. Their 2+ hour sets incorporate all their hits as well as many reggae classics by Bob Marley and others.

DJs on the night will be Heavy J from the Special Needs collective and the incomparable Nick Lloyd.

THE BEST FLAT WHITE IN LONDON :: UPDATE

We had hoped to announce the winners this month, but we are still waiting for some of our reporters to get back to us with their findings, so ….. it looks like it might be August now.

If the reports we have had in so far are anything to go by, the results are going to be very interesting, and we look forward to your feedback on them. One thing is for sure though – there are a lot more places to get a flat white in London then we previously imagined, which can only be a good thing!

*******************************************************************************************
THE BLACK SEEDS :: COMPETITION

It’s like London buses round here at the moment – we hadn’t run any competitions before and suddenly we get 3 offers at once!

This month those cheeky Seeds have given us 5 signed copies of their new album to give away. Although “Into the Dojo” came out in NZ last year, it hasn’t graced Europe yet, but thankfully the wonderful people behind Germany’s cult Sonar Kollektiv label have decided it is worthy of a release, with a few extra tracks.

To win your copy, please email theseeds@spacific.net and tell us the name of first Black Seeds album.

KOKO :: DAVE DOBBYN :: 21/06/07

Tickets are, unsurprisingly, flying out the door fast for this, Dave’s first big indoor show in London for years. His band for the night is former Mutton Birds drummer, Ross Burge and Lucid 3 bass player, Marcus Lawson, and the support is former 8 frontman, Bruce Conlon’s new solo act.

Otherwise, there isn’t much that we can be write about Dave Dobbyn that you probably don’t know already: living legend, national icon, singer songwriter par example, all round good bloke! His live shows are renowned not just for the songs, but for the in between banter – jokes, tales of misdemeanors past and other musings on life, the universe and everything else.

But it is his songs that he is most famous for, with 7 of his compositions being voted into the top 50 favourite Kiwi songs of all time in a recent poll by Telecom: “Loyal”, “Slice of Heaven”, “Bliss’”, “Welcome Home”, “Be Mine Tonight”, “Whaling” and “Outlook for Thursday”. And doubtless those seven will all get rolled out on this night, as well as countless others.

We might be able to run a late night bar in one of the smaller rooms upstairs – more info on that next month.

THE BEST FLAT WHITE IN LONDON?

Several years ago, an intrepid Kiwi explorer went out into the coffee desert of London to report on where to get the best flat white in town. Her report is up at www.spacific.net/index.php/sp/information/articles/in_search_of_the_perfect_flat_white.

Since then, several Kiwi owned and managed coffee shops have opened up, including Flat White and Sacred in Soho, so it seemed only fair to conduct another survey. We are looking for someone to conduct this incredibly stressful task! We can’t pay you for your time unfortunately, but we will pay for all the coffees you taste and give you a pair of free tickets to one of the shows we are promoting in London this year.

If you would like to give this a go, please email us at kiaora@spacific.net.

ISLINGTON ACADEMY :: ELEMENO P + STERIOGRAM :: 05/04/07

Making this the rockiest start to a year ever for Spacific, Elemeno P will now be joined by Steriogram and Deja Voodoo for their inaugural London show.

For those of you who have managed to avoid them thus far, power pop rockers Elemeno P burst onto the scene back in 2003 with their “Love and Disrespect” album, whose simple guitar driven pop songs with big choruses pushed them to sales of over 45,000 albums in NZ alone. They built on this success with 2005’s “Trouble in Paradise”, which spawned hit singles, “One Left Standing” and “Burn” and helped them to win Best Group at the NZ Music Awards that year.

Steriogram tasted similar success with their debut album, “Schmack”. Singed by legendary American label Capitol Records, they toured the US for over a year, and hit the big time when their “Walkie Talkie Man” track was used in one of the first iPod campaigns. This pushed them into the Top 20 in the UK and led to further hits worldwide. Tired of major label shenanigans, they have just released their second album, “This Is Not The Target Market” on their own label.

Deja Voodoo began as the fictional house band for the show Back of the Y Masterpiece Television. The 15 seconds of mimed rock’n’roll these three posers produced at the start of each episode was enough to score them a nationwide Orientation tour, and they have carried on from there. If you like badly played metal solos, lame Exponents-like songs and moronic vocalisation – you’ll love Deja Voodoo!

BIG CHILL HOUSE :: WAITANGI DAY :: 06/02/07

This year’s Waitangi Day event will be at The Big Chill House, the Big Chill Festival’s latest venue. This is because the lovely people who manage it have offered to pay the costs themselves, so that there will be no entry charge, which strikes us as a good thing!

A lush 3 floored venue, The Big Chill House is just by Kings Cross station and has an excellent restaurant that will be serving Kiwi flavoured snacks on the night, 2 mezzanine lounge areas looking over the main space, a sunken Swedish style basement with fake fire, and an upstairs cocktail lounge which we will only use if things get very hectic downstairs. If you would like to book a table or an area these are the numbers: to book a table call 020 7427 2541; to reserve an area call 020 7427 2540.

We will be starting at 5pm, with DJ Ajax spinning Kiwi classics and more, until Ngati Ranana, the London Maori Club, perform at 8pm, to be swiftly followed by our favourite London based singer songwriter, Jayson Norris. To finish the night off in style, Nick Lloyd and guests will play until midnight, when we should all probably troupe off home!

From: 5pm til 12am.
On: 257-259 Pentonville Road, London N1 9NL
Nearest tubes: Kings Cross

SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE :: THE FEELERS :: 01/02/07

Fresh from a stadium tour of NZ, The Feelers will make a welcome return to the UK next month, with support from the sublime Anika Moa.

The Feelers have dominated the New Zealand charts and album sales for the past decade: their three hit albums have spawned over 20 top 20 singles, including monster hits such as “Supersystem”, “Venus” and “Stand Up”, and their just-released album, “One World”, debuted at Number 1 last November. They have also won three APRA Silver Scroll Awards for the highest played songs on radio nationwide and all of their albums have achieved multi platinum sales selling over 200,000 albums. This will be their first concert in London for three years.

Singer-songwriter Anika Moa entered the New Zealand music scene with her album “Thinking Room” which debuted at Number 1 and reached double-platinum sales status. Singles such as ‘Youthful’, ‘Good In My Head’, and ‘Falling In Love Again’ became massive hits, making Anika one of New Zealand’s leading female artists. Her second album, Stolen Hill, was recorded at Bethell’s Beach, on the West coast of Auckland, and displayed a more reflective side to her character, addressing political, cultural and personal issues in more depth than on “Thinking Room”. Her songs explored the notion of Aotearoa’s nationhood and in particular the recurrent themes of her own Maori heritage; the legacy of culture, land and tangata whenua.

BIG CHILL BAR :: IKE :: 04/10/06

Isaac Tucker aka Ike first made a name for himself back home as part of the group, New Loungehead, then went on to make drum’n’bass as Cuba & Gizmo, before settling down into his current role as drummer for cult punk-funk/electro band Spektrum, whose “Kinda New” was the dancefloor hit of 2005. Their new album is due out early November and Isaac will be spinning some sneaky preview tunes.

BIG CHILL BAR :: FUNKNSLOCUTS :: 01/11/06

Better known as the smooth headed keyboard operator out of ‘Minuit’, FunknSloCuts is Ryan Behre’s production and DJ alter ego. For several years now he has been beavering away, laying down big beats and fat synth bass lines, often sacrificing his relationship with his neighbours due to noise complaints! Recent treats to come out of his studio include his sterling remix of Pitch Black’s “Freefall” and Minuit’s own “Fuji”. He has also been playing shows throughout NZ, often in the wind up or wind down slots at Minuit gigs, wowing audiences till breakfast time with the freshest and classiest prime breakbeat cuts.

THE RHYTHM FACTORY :: MINUIT :: 02/11/06

Electro-breaks trio Minuit have forged a singular path through New Zealand’s dance music scene, at odds with its obsession with reggae, dub and hip hop. Their angular breakbeats and Ruth Carr’s vocal style seemingly owe more to urban metropolises like London, so it is only fitting that they are finally making their way over here to play a few shows and help promote the 12’’ release of “Fuji”, taken from their last album, “The Guards Themselves”.

You can check them out at www.myspace.com/minuittheband and their latest video is up at www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U7KDsPjRNs. Supporting them on the night will be DJs Tim Squier, FunknSloCuts and Finland’s DJ Infekto vs Rico Tubbs.
