HMV FORUM :: THE BLACK SEEDS + RHOMBUS IN DUB :: 08/08/10

We are very happy to announce Rhombus in Dub as special guests for this Sunday’s show at the HMV Forum.

This will be the first ever London show for Wellington’s respected dub’n’bass outfit, the creators of hits such as “Clav Dub” and more. Performing in their three-piece format, they bring the studio to the stage and take their unique blend of all things heavyweight and mash it up for the dancefloor with a live mix of exclusive dub-heavy titles, including original Rhombus tunes, bootlegs and classics.

Following them will be the one and only Easy Star All-Stars, the masterminds behind three of the best-selling reggae albums of the last decade – Dub Side of the Moon, Radiodread and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band. Renowned for their live show, Easy Star All-Stars regularly perform at many of the world’s major festivals, and return to the UK on the back of standout performances at Glastonbury in 2009.

This show, though, is all about the band described by Clash Magazine as ‘one of the best live reggae acts on the planet’. The Black Seeds come to England fresh from a month long tour of the States and a whirlwind trip round Europe, where their unique fusion of big-beat funk, dub, soul, afro-beat, mixed with vintage roots-reggae, has been rousing audiences and winning them fans.

Having burst onto New Zealand’s music scene with their “Keep on Pushing” album back in 2001, the band have released a flurry of stellar albums since: “On the Sun”, “Into the Dojo” and “Solid Ground”, with hits such as “Cool Me Down”, “So True” and “Keep on Pushing” gaining airplay at home and abroad. Work has allegedly begun on their fifth album, due for release early 2011.

Tickets for this show are £18.50 +b/f and each ticket gives you a download link to a free 4 track EP of tracks by the bands. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster (0844 277 4321) or http://tinyurl.com/3amy6dj.

From 6.30pm til 11.30pm
At: 9-17 Highgate Road, London, NW5 1JY
Nearest tube: Kentish Town

RHYTHM FACTORY :: LADI6 & PARKS :: 26/08/10

Ladi’s final show of the year in England comes at the end of an amazing summer for her. She and Parks moved to Berlin in March, and have been gigging and recording ever since: they supported funk legend Gil Scott-Heron for more than a dozen of his shows, have played festivals across the continent as well as clubs from Paris to Porto, Dublin to Dresden and Aberdeen to Amsterdam.

Which means her live show is even better now than it was back in April when she rocked a packed Vibe Bar on Brick Lane. With seven tracks recorded already for her new album, we could be in for some fresh treats as well!

Tickets are £7.50 +b/f in advance from Ticketweb (http://tinyurl.com/ladi6) or it will be £12 on the door.

From: 7.30pm to 1am
At: 16-18 Whitechapel Road, E1 1EW
Nearest Tubes: Aldgate East or Whitechapel

HMV FORUM :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 08/08/10

Reggae-soul heavyweights The Black Seeds are playing their only London show of 2010 at The HMV Forum on Sunday 8th August with support from the legendary Easy Star All Stars.

Described by Clash Magazine as ‘one of the best live reggae acts on the planet’, The Black Seeds following has continued to spread quickly around the globe in recent years on the back of successful European and North American festival tours and album releases.

After a 2009 sell-out show at the Shepherds Bush Empire, The Black Seeds once again return with their 8-piece band and masterful boundary-crossing fusion of big-beat funk, dub, soul, afro-beat, mixed with vintage roots-reggae.

For this special one-off double header, The Black Seeds are joined by the one and only Easy Star All Stars, the masterminds behind three of the best-selling reggae albums of the last decade – Dub Side of the Moon, Radiodread and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band. Renowned for their live show, Easy Star All Stars regularly perform at many of the world’s major festivals, and return to the UK on the back of standout performances at Glastonbury in 2009.

THE UNION CHAPEL :: NGATI RANANA presents URURANGI :: 20/06/10

Ngati Ranana, the London Maori Club, has been meeting since the late 1950s, convening every Wednesday at New Zealand House and once a year at the marae at Clandon Park. Many of the Club form an all singing and dancing Maori culture performance group, which provides both traditional and contemporary on-stage shows, that make most warm blooded kiwi homesick.

This August they have been invited to compete in Te Manahua, aninternational Maori performing arts competition, in Hawai’i, where they will be performing against other groups from round the world.

To help them raise funds to pay for the considerable travel costs to the competition, they are hosting an amazing line-up of South Pacifican talent at the Union Chapel on Sunday 20 June. Everyone involved is donating their time and services, with all profits going to cover the flight costs.

The entertainment includes heart pounding log drumming and hip aching dancing from Beats of Polynesia; soulful tunes from LA Mitchell, recently of Fly My Pretties project, and part of Dave Dobbyn’s band; spoken word from titillating Samoan artist, Sistar Spacific; an installation by George Nuku; a piece of Fiji from Ana Lavekau and the grand finale: haka and poi swinging from Ngati Ranana.

Any of you who have seen Ngati Ranana perform at one of our Waitangi Day events or at Toast Festival or elsewhere will be in agreement that they put on a very fine show, and given the amazing acoustics of the Union Chapel, this should be a performance like no other.

To make this event a real success, we must sell 400 tickets and so need the help and support of all you out there.

Advance tickets are on sale now for £12.50 + b/f from Ticketweb (08444771 000 or http://tinyurl.com/ururangi). Door sales will be £20 on the day, plus families can buy special tickets on the door: 2 Adults and up to 4 children for £30.00.

You may know Mr McGlashan from his days in The Mutton Birds, or Blam Blam Blam or possibly even The Front Lawn. Wherever you know him from, you are sure to have heard his songs over the years: “Anchor Me”, “Dominion Road”, “Nature”, “There is no Depression in New Zealand” or the smash hit that Don wrote for Hollie Smith – “Bathe in the River”.

Who knows what he will be singing at this solo show but it is sure to be good! His time supporting Crowded House has honed his live performances down to a fine art, and he never fails to please.

Supporting him on the night will be Rodney Fisher (formerly of Goodshirt) and Anton Barbeau. Tickets are £10 +b/f from Ticketweb (08444 771 000).

HMV FORUM :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 08/08/10

In a sign of perhaps how far the Kiwi reggae/dub scene has come overseas, Wellington’s The Black Seeds are being *supported* on their only London show this year by one of the biggest reggae bands of the moment, Easy Star All Stars. Of course it helps that the Seeds are signed to the Stars’ label in the USA, and so they are friends, but it is also testament to the quality of their life affirming, funk infused, dub drenched, reggaefied good time grooves.

If you haven’t heard of the Easy Star All Stars, they are the geniuses behind “Dub Side of the Moon”, “Radiodread” and “Easy Stars Lonely Heart Dub Band”, all albums dedicated to reggae/dub versions of Pink Floyd, Radiohead and The Beatles respectively. You can check some of those out at www.myspace.com/easystarallstars.

Tickets for this exclusive double bill are £18.50 +b/f and each ticket gives you a download link to a free 4 track EP of tracks by the bands. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.co.uk (0844 277 4321).

THE VIBE BAR :: AN EMERALD CITY :: 18/05/2010

An Emerald City are a six piece band, originally from Auckland but now based in Berlin. Their blend of psychedelic rock with Eastern influences is critically acclaimed, so much so that renowned music journalist Graham Reid wrote this:

“For my money this band is the most interesting, musically ambitious and creative I have seen in this country in many years. They possess that rarity in New Zealand music, an aesthetic sensibility — and it manifests itself in instrumental music which exotic, evocative, rides intelligent dynamics and is endlessly evolving. The instrumentation is based around rock (guitars, keyboards, rhythm section) but into that they pull Persian lute, sitar, violin . . . It makes for an album that almost seems to grow in your hearing, to take on a life of its own. It is quasi-psychedelic, improvised world music at one level, but sounds like nothing else in New Zealand’s musical landscape.”

Perhaps the final seal of approval is that Flying Nun have signed their debut for European release this September! You can check them out yourself at www.myspace.com/anemeraldcity or tickets are £5 +b/f from Ticketweb or £8 on the door.

THE VIBE BAR :: JULIEN DYNE + LADI6 :: 23/04/2010

We are pleased to present this double bill of South Pacifican soul.

First up is Julien Dyne, perhaps best known for his work as the drummer for Opensouls and Tyra and the Tornadoes, plus his work with the likes of Verse Two, Nathan Haines, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Ladi6. Since his selection for the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome in 2004, Julien has been working with international artists and forging his own unique sound as a producer, resulting in the “Pins & Digits” album, which was released this year by European label BBE as well as by Japanese outfit Wonderful Noise. You can check tracks from that at www.myspace.com/juliendyne.

Ladi6 has spent the last ten years or more touring with and backing up NZ artists like Fat Freddy’s Drop, Shapeshifter and Scribe, recording killer tunes as Sheelaroc and under her own name, plus providing vocal assistance to classic cuts by Kiwi artists such as 50 Hz and Shapeshifter, as well as international acts like Sepalot and Freddie Krueger. Last year saw the release of her debut album ”Time Is Not Much”, which claimed the Best Urban/Hip Hop Album title at the New Zealand Music Awards, the one award she “wanted the most”.

There are no advance sales for this show but it will be £5 on the door.

THE VIBE BAR :: JAYSON NORRIS + LOTUS MASON :: 20/01/2010

Our first show of the year/decade is a double header featuring two London based Kiwi bands celebrating their respective releases.

Jayson Norris should need little introduction by now, having played so many Spacific events, supported so many great New Zealand bands at their UK shows and graced so many outdoor festivals over the years. His South Pacifican take on Jack Johnson and Ben Harper has won him a strong UK following, and he has just returned from a sell out tour of NZ.

Late last year he released his sophomore album, “Freedom to Live”, but somehow never got round to holding a launch party. Thankfully his friends Lotus Mason, formerly The Thin Men (and before that El Hula), wanted to launch their new album, “Rust & Roll”, so they have joined forces for the night. They will be onstage around 9.45pm with Jayson on beforehand at 8.30pm.

All the early bird tickets have gone, but there are some left for £5 at Ticketweb (08444 77 1000 or the direct link is http://tinyurl.com/y9q4zq8). Otherwise it will be £8 on the door.

THE RHYTHM FACTORY :: PITCH BLACK :: 22/10/09

Pitch Black are Salmonella Dub producer Paddy Free and award winning multimedia artist Michael Hodgson. Having pumped their way through New Zealand’s electronic music scene since their inaugural performance at the annual Gathering New Year’s eve festival in 1997, they have spent the last twelve years rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining thousands of fans across the world.

Hard to box into a single audio ‘genre’, Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like “Orbital meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor”.

If you haven’t come across them before, you can download tracks for free from www.pitchblack.co.nz, watch them in action at www.youtube.com/pitchblackofficial or take a leap of faith and just come on down! Supporting them on the night will be English dub/breaks/electronica group Subgiant, plus DJs Earwaker and Johnny Clash.

Advance tickets are £8.50 in advance from Ticketweb (08444 771 000 or http://tinyurl.com/pblondon) or it will be £12 on the door.

From: 7pm til 1am.
At: 16 – 18 Whitechapel Rd, E1 1EW

Supporting them on the night are new kids on the block, Electric Wire Hustle, with their unique twist on modern hip-hop, psychedelic and soul. DJ duties will be handled by the Radio Riddler Soundsystem, aka Fast and Frank from Fun Lovin’ Criminals.

CENTRE FOR NEW ZEALAND STUDIES PETITION

As some of you may know, a Centre for New Zealand Studies was set up at Birkbeck University in London with funding from the NZ and UK governments. Since then the Centre has organised 114 events, 5 conferences and 3 festivals.

Unfortunately due to political infighting at the University, the Centre has been told it will be closed in November. If you feel at all strongly about this, please sign the online petition at www.lobbyingforum.com/petition-detail.aspx?id=128.
