CARGO :: WAITANGI DAY :: 06/02/08

This year’s Waitangi Day event comes to you courtesy of Monteith’s lager, in our humble opinion the finest beer in the Southern Hemisphere!

We open the doors at 5pm with sweet reggae tunes in the front bar from DJ Horace (it is, after all, Bob Marley’s birthday!). Then around 7 o’clock, Ngati Ranana, the London Maori club, will perform on the main stage.

This will be followed by a short performance by artist Rosanna Raymond aka Sistar Spacific. After tunes from DJ Big K, there will be live sets from first Precious Clark and then LOOP Recordings’ amazing Adi Dick. Finally, the night will be brought to a close by DJ Tubbs (Hometaping/Exceptional).

Throughout the night, the Cargo kitchen will be rustling up Kiwi flavoured treats – due to unfortunate circumstances their indoor kitchen will be shut, but, in true Antipodean style they have set up the barbies in the back yard and will be grilling away for the evening! Please note they are liable to run out of the more popular items, so get in there early.

We will also be running a CD stall, with nearly 200 NZ titles, 90% of which will be on sale for the special price of £7. if you would like to pre-arrange for something to be available, please visit www.netsoundsmusic.com/nsu/2240/2/0.html to see what is available and then email us at kiaora@spacific.net to let us know what you would like to reserve.

From 5pm til 1am
On: 83 Rivington Street, EC2A 3AY
Nearest tubes: Liverpool Street or Old Street

BIG CHILL BAR ::JEFF WOOD :: 05/03/08

One half of the legendary Unit 23, Jeff started making music in the early nineties when he and his brother performed live electronic audio based performances at art shows and in galleries. They became involved in the emerging electronic dance music scene in Hamilton, and played at many of the early warehouse parties and outdoor events that were beginning to spring up around the country, such as Entrain and the Gathering. They were well known for playing all their sets live, dragging their entire studio outdoors, along with a barrage of slide and film projectors.

From: 7pm til 12am
On: Dray Walk, just off Brick Lane, London E1 6QL
Nearest tubes: Liverpool Street or Aldgate East

COMPETITION :: MINUIT CDs

Proving that NZ really is ahead of the times, pesky Nelsonian breakbeaters Minuit finally release their European debut this April – entitled (deep breath) “I went to this party and there were 88 guards with guns”, it is a collection of the finest tracks of their first two albums and the very limited edition Guns EP and comes out on the hipper than hip Dollhouse label. We have five copies to give away, so please email givemebreaks@spacific.net and tell us the name of the lead singer.

While you are at it, Minuit would love you to vote for them in the upcoming Breakspoll Awards. They reckon they should be the Best Live Act, so please go to www.breakspoll.com/vote.asp before February 15th and help them climb to the top of the greasy breaks pole!

If you don’t want to try your luck at winning tickets, then from Friday 1st February you can buy them directly from www.fatfreddysdrop.com.

CARGO :: WAITANGI DAY :: 06/02/08

We are putting together an eclectic array of performers, DJs and artists to appear at this year’s Waitangi Day event. So far confirmed we have Adi Dick (LOOP) and Precious Clark playing live as well as DJ sets from Tubbs, Big K and Horace.

As mentioned in last month’s mailout, entry will be free all night, courtesy of the generosity of Cargo and Montheith’s lager, which thankfully you will be able to buy behind the bar all night. The Cargo kitchen will also be rustling up some Kiwi flavoured treats – green lipped mussels, lamb burgers and kumara chips have been mentioned.

We will have more info next month on the schedule and line up.

LOCKSIDE LOUNGE :: JAYSON NORRIS + THE THIN MEN :: 08/12/07

To celebrate Christmas, and amazingly enough, the 100th show that Spacific has hosted, we are most happy to present two of our favourite London based live acts.

First up will be The Thin Men, playing a stripped back semi acoustic set. Born out of the ashes of El Hula, and fronted by Blair Jollands (described by The Guardian as the southern hemisphere’s Scott-Walker-with-a-twist-of-Jim-Morrison), The Thin Men take the best of contemporary and retro and add touches of indie to the melodic twang of country! You can find out more on them at www.myspace.com/thethinmen2

Our headliner is Jayson Norris – NZ’s answer to Jack Johnson, perhaps! Currently working on his second album with a prime selection of guest contributors, Jayson has had a very busy year, including supporting Dave Dobbyn on his European tour this June. Check him out at www.jaysonnorris.com.

Space is limited at the Lockside so we have put tickets up for £4 in advance at Ticketweb (08700 600 100) or http://tinyurl.com/2pwf96. Otherwise it will be £5 on the door.

NEIGHBOURHOOD :: OPSHOP :: 22/11/07

The winners of this year’s People’s Choice Award at the annual NZ Music Awards have come along way since the original trio met at Christchurch’s Catholic Boy’s School. Jason Kerrison, Matt Treacy and Tim Skeddon formed the band back in 2002, and were signed the next year to Siren Records.

Their debut album, “You Are Here”, came out to commercial and critical acclaim in 2004, thanks in part to the radio friendly nature of their songs. Despite personnel changes in 2005, the band soldiered on with the follow up, drafting in Manic Street Preachers producer Greg Haver to help shape their songs. Released earlier this year, “Second Hand Planet” is well on its way to platinum sales, having entered the charts at #5.

They have supported Snow Patrol, Silverchair and Powderfinger on their NZ tours, and are really looking forward to their only UK show of 2007. For more info, check out www.myspace.com/opshop or www.opshopmusic.com.

Supporting them on the night will be the lovely Leigh Franklin – www.myspace.com/leighfranklinheaven.

Advance tickets are £8 from Ticketweb (08700 600 100) or http://tinyurl.com/28pcpp
Door sales will be £12

Doors are at 7.30pm, with Leigh Franklin on at 8.45 and Opshop on around 9.30pm.

BIG CHILL BAR :: EAST LARRY :: 05/12/07

East Larry (his mother calls him Luke Procter) hails from Wellington, a city that shaped his interests in hip hop, dub, funk, drum and bass and dirty boogie………..

In the capital he was lucky enough to play at some of his favourite haunts: Sandwhiches, Studio Nine and Havana, as well supporting 50Hz and regularly appearing on RadioActive. Since arriving in London in 2005, Larry has co-hosted a popular monthly night at The Driver called ‘The Larry and Mo Show’ and played in the bar at the legendary Movement night at Bar Rhumba. More recently, his cheeky guest appearances at H*E*R*D, a hip hop night hosted by his foolish friend DJ Vee (The Elephant), have gained a fresh following at the Lockside Lounge in Camden.

THE BEST FLAT WHITE IN LONDON?

Many months ago, we asked you to nominate your favourite places to have a Flat White in London. Four intrepid reporters (Blair Jagusch, Emma Philpott, Matt Fordham and Rory Kingan) went one step further and wrote up detailed reports on each place they visited.

We had been waiting for our lazy developers to finish updating the Spacific website (anyone work with the eZ Publish CMS …. please get in touch!) but thankfully a friend has set up a Spacific group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6463530279) and we are posting the reports up there.

In a nutshell the results were as follows:

Overall Winner: Flat White
Runner Up: Monmouth Coffee
Highest Scoring Coffee: Tea and Coffee Plant
Highest Scoring Ambience: Sacred and Scooterworks

Please feel free to add your comments (oh and join the group!) on this report, on any gigs you have been to recently, on who you would like to see come over and play in London next year or anything else that takes your fancy!

BIG CHILL BAR :: MISS DIGGA :: 07/11/07

Having moved to London from New Zealand in 1997, Miss Digga immediately found herself at the centre of the city’s dance scene. Over the years she has played at almost every club in town, as well at the TDK dance festival and the Notting Hill Carnival. As a natural progression of her talents, she has also launched her own production career, and her remixes for skewed Berlin electro outfit Warren Suicide have caught the attention of Fatboy Slim, Laurent Garnier, and Annie Mac to name a few. More info, and some rather tasty free mixes to download, at www.myspace.com/missdigga.

COMPETITION:: PIONEERS @ THE PACIFIC PLAYHOUSE

This month we have 2 pairs of tickets to see a brand new play, PIONEERS at the PACIFIC PLAYHOUSE, anytime during its run from 22 to 27 October.

PIONEERS is the remarkable true story of the people who chose to leave Victorian England and Ireland to settle in the wilderness that would have been New Zealand 150 years ago, told through a mesmerising musical performance. On the way they encounter hardship and uncertainty, freedom and love, but, most importantly, the prospect of a new beginning full of possibility. The show also incorporates a visually stunning backdrop of New Zealand scenery mixed in with digitally reproduced archival images of Magic Lantern slides from the UK’s Centre for New Zealand Studies Archive.

To win the tickets, please email kiaora@spacific.net and we will draw 2 names out of the metaphorical hat on October 15th. For more info on the venue, please check www.pacificplayhouse.com or for ticketing, please check www.dafmusic.com.

BAR ACADEMY :: STERIOGRAM :: 26/09/07

Punk rockers Steriogram first tasted success with their debut album, “Schmack”: Signed by legendary American label Capitol Records, they toured the US for over a year, and hit the big time when their “Walkie Talkie Man” track was used in one of the first iPod campaigns. This pushed them into the Top 20 in the UK and led to further hits worldwide.

However, eventually they tired of major label shenanigans and cancelled their contract, taking matters into their own hands. Last November they released their second album, “This Is Not The Target Market” on their own label in NZ, and it finally comes out in the UK this month, with Kerrang giving it a 4K review. This show is the launch party for the album, and should feature support slots by a couple of London based bands they are friends with, but so far have failed to tell us who they are!!

ELECTRIC BALLROOM :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 04/10/07

The Southern hemisphere’s premier live drum and bass act first came to prominence on the back of supporting Salmonella Dub. Initially they signed to Kog Transmissions with whom they released “Real Time” back in 2001, which they followed with “Riddim Wise” on their own label in 2004, both of which have now achieved gold sales status. Their last album, “Soulstice” came out last year to critical and commercial acclaim, selling over 15,000 copies in NZ and 10,000 in Oz. Their new album of live recordings made with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, cunningly titled “Live” came out last week and went straight to No6 in the NZ Album Charts.

**There are now only 100 tickets left, and while we are trying to source another show later in the month, it is proving difficult as they have an already tight schedule, and Tiki, who does their sound, has to return to NZ to launch his new album. So …. if you want to come then please buy your tix now to avoid disappointment.**

On October 27th they release the next installment, “Rude Mechanicals” featuring 9 new tracks, 5 of which you can preview at www.myspace.com/pitchblacknz. At the moment this is the only London show these boys can do, so if you want to come, then get over to http://tinyurl.com/yvreer pretty sharpish!

In the meantime, some info: Shapeshifter are the southern hemisphere’s premier live drum and bass act, initially signed to Kog Transmissions with whom they released “Real Time” back in 2001, followed by “Riddim Wise” on their own label in 2004, both of which have now achieved gold sales status. Their last album, “Soulstice” came out last year to critical and commercial acclaim, selling over 15,000 copies in NZ and 10,000 in Oz. They are releasing a new album this September featuring live recordings made with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, which hopefully they will be bringing copies of to sell at the gig.

You can check them out, tracks and videos that is, at www.myspace.com/shapeshifterlive.

Tickets are £12.50 from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) and doors will open at 7pm.

Where: Electric Ballroom, 184 Camden High Street, NW1 8QP

THE CORONET :: KATCHAFIRE :: 07/07/07

Ever since their debut single “Giddy Up” dropped back in 2003, Katchafire have gone from strength to strength, with both “Slow Burning” and “Revival” selling over 30,000 copies each in New Zealand and 10,000 in Hawaii, of all places!

Their third and latest album is due for release very soon, but unfortunately they won’t be bringing any copies over with them this time  However they are sure to be playing some of the new tracks at this gig.

The band have earned the well deserved title of hardest working band in NZ due to their relentless touring schedule – no pub is too small, no town too far away for the brothers of the fire to grace with their skanking rhythms and fat basslines. Their 2+ hour sets incorporate all their hits as well as many reggae classics by Bob Marley and others.

DJs on the night will be Heavy J from the Special Needs collective and the incomparable Nick Lloyd.

THE BEST FLAT WHITE IN LONDON :: UPDATE

We had hoped to announce the winners this month, but we are still waiting for some of our reporters to get back to us with their findings, so ….. it looks like it might be August now.

If the reports we have had in so far are anything to go by, the results are going to be very interesting, and we look forward to your feedback on them. One thing is for sure though – there are a lot more places to get a flat white in London then we previously imagined, which can only be a good thing!

KOKO :: DAVE DOBBYN :: 21/06/07

Tickets are, unsurprisingly, flying out the door fast for this, Dave’s first big indoor show in London for years. His band for the night is former Mutton Birds drummer, Ross Burge and Lucid 3 bass player, Marcus Lawson, and the support is former 8 frontman, Bruce Conlon’s new solo act.

Otherwise, there isn’t much that we can be write about Dave Dobbyn that you probably don’t know already: living legend, national icon, singer songwriter par example, all round good bloke! His live shows are renowned not just for the songs, but for the in between banter – jokes, tales of misdemeanors past and other musings on life, the universe and everything else.

But it is his songs that he is most famous for, with 7 of his compositions being voted into the top 50 favourite Kiwi songs of all time in a recent poll by Telecom: “Loyal”, “Slice of Heaven”, “Bliss’”, “Welcome Home”, “Be Mine Tonight”, “Whaling” and “Outlook for Thursday”. And doubtless those seven will all get rolled out on this night, as well as countless others.

We might be able to run a late night bar in one of the smaller rooms upstairs – more info on that next month.
