THE VIBE BAR :: JAYSON NORRIS + LOTUS MASON :: 20/01/2010

Our first show of the year/decade is a double header featuring two London based Kiwi bands celebrating their respective releases.

Jayson Norris should need little introduction by now, having played so many Spacific events, supported so many great New Zealand bands at their UK shows and graced so many outdoor festivals over the years. His South Pacifican take on Jack Johnson and Ben Harper has won him a strong UK following, and he has just returned from a sell out tour of NZ.

Late last year he released his sophomore album, “Freedom to Live”, but somehow never got round to holding a launch party. Thankfully his friends Lotus Mason, formerly The Thin Men (and before that El Hula), wanted to launch their new album, “Rust & Roll”, so they have joined forces for the night. They will be onstage around 9.45pm with Jayson on beforehand at 8.30pm.

All the early bird tickets have gone, but there are some left for £5 at Ticketweb (08444 77 1000 or the direct link is http://tinyurl.com/y9q4zq8). Otherwise it will be £8 on the door.

From 7pm
At: The Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL
Nearest Tubes: Aldgate East or Liverpool St
Venue website: www.vibe-bar.co.uk/

THE RHYTHM FACTORY :: PITCH BLACK :: 22/10/09

Pitch Black are Salmonella Dub producer Paddy Free and award winning multimedia artist Michael Hodgson. Having pumped their way through New Zealand’s electronic music scene since their inaugural performance at the annual Gathering New Year’s eve festival in 1997, they have spent the last twelve years rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining thousands of fans across the world.

Hard to box into a single audio ‘genre’, Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like “Orbital meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor”.

If you haven’t come across them before, you can download tracks for free from www.pitchblack.co.nz, watch them in action at www.youtube.com/pitchblackofficial or take a leap of faith and just come on down! Supporting them on the night will be English dub/breaks/electronica group Subgiant, plus DJs Earwaker and Johnny Clash.

Advance tickets are £8.50 in advance from Ticketweb (08444 771 000 or http://tinyurl.com/pblondon) or it will be £12 on the door.

From: 7pm til 1am.

Known for a broad selection of music, his latest mix “123 Go” features bits of Flight of The Conchords, Common, Beenie Man, The Black Seeds and Marvin Gaye and that’s just the first 5 minutes!

We have 5 copies to give away to the first people to email us at kiaora@spacific.net. More info on the young man can be found at http://tinyurl.com/mikkidee.

Do you remember the TV series “The Adventurer”? Shown in NZ back in the late ‘80s it tells the story of Jack Vincent, an aristocratic smuggler caught and transported to a penal colony on Norfolk Island, and featured a young Temuera Morrison as well as breathtaking natural sceneries, highly authentic sets and thrilling storylines.

The lovely people (well, person) at Network DVD have given us 3 copies to give away to the first people to tell us the name of the actor who plays Jack Vincent. Answers, as always, to kiaora@spacific.net by June 22nd please. (PS. If you don’t win, you can buy them from http://tinyurl.com/kl6hdl)

The awe-inspiring Shapeshifter bring their phenomenal live show back to London this month for their only show in the capital this year.

Their blissed out South Pacific drum n bass sound has been finding them fans in the UK press, with feedback for their recent album release here including the following:
“A Treat For drum and bass addicts requiring emotional substance” Music Week
“Album Of The Month” 8/10 Future Music Magazine
“This is engaging and should have you hooked from the off. Well worth checking out” 4/5 IDJ
“Quite simply the hottest thing coming up from Aotearoa” DRUM&BASS ARENA

Rumour has it that they have finished their new album, so expect lots of fresh tracks alongside the classics. A sweet taster of what you might expect can be seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFWcMn6afCY.

THE VIBE BAR :: A LOW HUM :: 23/05/09

To celebrate New Zealand Music Month, we are happy to announce a collaboration with the wonderful A Low Hum posse, the people behind the phenomenally successful Camp A Low Hum festival that occurs every year in February around Waitangi weekend.

They have programmed the upstairs Live room at The Vibe Bar: playing on the night will be young punks Bang Bang Eche, eighties avenger Disasteradio and the blisteringly beautiful Batrider plus special guests to be announced nearer the time.

Downstairs will be all about the good times grooves as DJ’s Ajax, Tim Squier and Regan go from dub to disco and beyond, taking in whatever they can find in the box as they go. Plus a very special set from expat DJericho, who is launching his debut release, a fusion of electronic and acoustic instruments with a down-tempo feel entitled The Whitechapel EP, that weekend.

Entry: £4 on the door.
From 8pm til 1am
At: The Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL
Nearest Tubes: Aldgate East or Liverpool St
Venue website: www.vibe-bar.co.uk/

TOAST FESTIVAL OFFER

Toast Festival has gone back outdoors to Clapham Common this year, and thankfully is under new, independent ownership too, so should be back to its former glory. It’s on June 27th, Dave Dobbyn is headlining, there will be international polo matches (really!) plus homegrown food and wine, and since all the rain will be falling on Glastonbury, it should be sunny too!

The nice people now running it have offered us 3 pairs of tickets: these are available to whoever emails us at kiaora@spacific.net to tell us where Toast is this year. We will email the winners on Monday 11th May, but don’t panic if you don’t win, as they have also offered 10% off tickets if you quote SPACIFIC1 or 4 tickets for the price of 3 if you quote SPACIFIC4. More info at toastfestivals.co.uk.

HMV FORUM :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 22/05/09

We are super stoked to add P-Money to the line up for Shapeshifter’s only London show this year – DJ extraordinaire, creator of four solo albums, producer of Scribe’s “Crusader”, co-owner of Auckland’s Dirty Records, TV show host, Songwriter of the Year (2004 NZMA) – there seemingly isn’t much that Mr Money hasn’t done in the music biz. His last single, “Everything” featuring Vince Harder, was one of the biggest selling tunes of the year in NZ and Australia, and is now gaining traction over these sides with radio plays by Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and others. Check out this and more at www.myspace.com/pmoneymusic.

But of course, this show isn’t about him – it is about the mighty Shapeshifter, the hottest live drum and bass act in the southern hemisphere, if not the world. They are currently beavering away in the studio, writing their fourth album, which is due for release later this year, so expect new tunes as well as the old classics.

We have been granted a late license so will be running the after party at the venue til 12.30 at least. Advance tickets are available for £17.50 +b/f from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) or it will be £22 on the door.

In true form, we can’t announce the line up just yet, but we can tell you it will be great! And that it will cost only £4 to get in all night. So please keep this night in your diary and watch out for updates on www.myspace.com/alowhum.
