O2 EMPIRE :: DAVE DOBBYN + DUKES :: 26/11/11

Joining Dave for his only European show of 2011 will be the very up and coming Dukes.

Formed by Christchurch brothers Matt and Jo Barus, Dukes have gone from winning MTV’s Kickstart competition to supporting Gomez, INXS, Blondie and Pretenders on their NZ dates. Their top 10 single ‘Vampires’ spent 18 months in the NZ airplay charts, winning ‘Video of the Year’ from Juice TV and ‘Breakthrough Artist’ from Myspace, while their second album ‘Still Life’ picked up Best Independent Rock album in Oz/NZ on iTunes for 2010.

You can check them out at facebook.com/dukestheband.

As for Dave, well, there isn’t much that we can be write about him that you probably don’t know already: living legend, national icon, singer songwriter par example, all round good bloke! His live shows are renowned not just for the songs, but for the in between banter – jokes, tales of misdemeanors past and other musings on life, the universe and everything else.

You are equally likely to know some of his songs, what with 7 of his compositions being voted into the top 50 favourite Kiwi songs of all time in a recent poll by Telecom: “Loyal”, “Slice of Heaven”, “Bliss”, “Welcome Home”, “Be Mine Tonight”, “Whaling” and “Outlook for Thursday”. Doubtless those seven will all get rolled out on the night, as well as countless others.

VIBE LIVE :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 27/10/11

Since 1999, Sola Rosa’s Andrew Spraggon has been tantalising listeners with otherworldly aural experiences, honing his craft and taking Sola Rosa from a self-released one man project to a fully-fledged live powerhouse. He’s kept good company on the road and in the studio, with the Sola Rosa band counting members of Dimmer, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Goldenhorse, Pluto and Sommerset amongst the ranks over the years, not to mention tapping the talents of internationally renowned artists like Nathan Haines and Spikey Tee along the way.

His albums have gone from strength to strength, with the last release, “Get it Together” chalking up the number one spot on both iTunes NZ and the Independent NZ Music Album Chart (where it stayed for four months), and reaching number 15 on the NZ Album Chart – all on the way to achieving Gold status.

The album finally sees an international release this month through Germany’s Melting Pot Music and to celebrate Sola Rosa are making their first tour of Europe. Unfortunately economics prohibited bringing the whole band this time, but Andrew has crafted a special soundsystem set and drafted in not just veteran MC Spikey Tee (Jah Wobble, Mr Scruff, Bomb The Bass) but also the amazingly talented Lisa Tomlins (Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Ebb).

Support on the night comes from dubmeister International Observer.

Tickets are on sale from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) for £9 +b/f or it will be £12 on the door.

O2 EMPIRE :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 24/09/11

Not long now til the final UK show by Shapeshifter before they head home to the southern hemisphere. The boys have been based in Berlin for the European summer, and in between festival appearances have been working hard on their new album. For those of you who haven’t seen them live, the Shapeshifter show is second to none: barreling drum’n’bass riddims, cavernous dub soundscapes and pounding hard rock riffs are fused into monstrous live grooves where all the parts move as one and tempos are ratcheted to breaking point!

VIBE LIVE :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 27/10/11

Since Andrew Spraggon’s first formative releases as Sola Rosa at the turn of the 21st century, he’s steadily built a reputation for his deft synthesis of styles and quiet disregard for the niceties of genre boundaries. With a catch-all sound encompassing the best of hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, all six of Sola Rosa’s critically acclaimed albums are a potent distillation of the music that’s influenced Spraggon over the course of his decade long career as a musician and producer. From a humble, self-released one man project to a decidedly deadly live collective, Sola Rosa has grown from a national treasure into an act of truly international repute.

For his first ever show in London, he will be joined by veteran MC Spikey Tee (Jah Wobble, Mr Scruff, Bomb The Bass) and vocalist Lisa Tomlins (Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Ebb).

INSPIRAL LOUNGE :: RHOMBUS IN DUB :: 20/08/11

Simon Rycroft from Rhombus will be playing a Rhombus in Dub set this weekend at Camden’s laidback Inspiral Lounge, and if that isn’t good news enough for you … the night is completely FREE.

Formed in 2002 by producers Koa Williams, Simon Rycroft and Thomas Voyce, Rhombus quickly became known as one of New Zealand’s premier exponents of the dub/bass/electronic genre, with the single “Clav Dub”, featuring Tiki, storming into the charts.

Having worked with over 20 vocalists and released four albums and 3 EP’s along the way, the past two years has seen the trio focus their attention on the Rhombus In Dub project, recording with international vocalists including Warrior Queen, Rodney P and Deadly Hunta. As such they have produced two limited-run CDs and the vinyl only “Bubble” EP.

This is a rare and exclusive opportunity to preview some of the group’s new material outside of New Zealand. Warm up comes from Strange Frequencies resident Nick Satta, spinning a diverse selection of some of the best old, new and future dub from around the world and beyond.

Before they head home for the Kiwi summer they are coming to London to play their final English show of the year. If all goes well, we will hear some of the new tunes alongside the classics.

BUSH HALL :: DON MCGLASHAN :: 11/06/11

The amazing Mr McGlashan graces us once more with his stellar solo show. The former frontman of The Mutton Birds, Blam Blam Blam and The Front Lawn has had a tough year, having been hospitalized in April after a car door opened on him while cycling through Auckland.

Now fully recovered, and armed only with his guitar, euphonium and harmonica, his live show rollicks through the back catalogue as well as playing some of his newer (equally good) solo stuff, throwing in jokes and anecdotes along the way.

By the way, if his name doesn’t ring a bell, his songs surely will, with five entries in APRA New Zealand’s Top 100 Songs Of All Time: “Anchor Me”, “Dominion Road”, “Don’t Fight It Marsha, It’s Bigger Than Both Of Us”, “There is no Depression in New Zealand” and “Andy”. Plus you must have heard “Bathe in the River”, which Don wrote for Hollie Smith.

He is supported on this, his only European show this year, by the amazing Mostar Diving Club. Check them out at www.themostardivingclub.com/.

Tickets are on sale from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) for £10 +b/f or it will be £15 on the door.

Heralded as a musical phenomenon, Shapeshifter’s unique blend of heavy soul and drum + bass is every bit as rugged and epic as the Kiwi landscape. Likened by one wag to Jonah Lomu on a D+B mission, their live show is second to none and guaranteed to knock you off your feet.

Having signed to UK label Hospital late last year, the boys have just released a selection of remixes of tracks from “The System is a Vampire” album, and are about to embark on recording their fifth studio album.

Joining them for this show is the first lady of NZ hip hop, Ladi6, with help from her right hand men, Parks and Julien Dyne.

VIBE LIVE :: AVALANCHE CITY & DANE RUMBLE :: 18/05/11

Last January we held our first showcase event organized in collaboration with the New Zealand Music Commission. This May, to coincide with The Great Escape festival in Brighton, we are happy to present our second event, with the additional support of Let The People Speak management, two of who’s artists are playing.

Avalanche City is the brainchild of Dave Baxter, who having completed his first album, made it available for free download on the internet. He was expecting only a few hundred copies to be downloaded, but after more than 10,000 downloads he took it offline, and began to market it. His debut single “Love Love Love” debuted at number one on the New Zealand charts, despite little radio play and the album subsequently soared into the charts as well. You can check him out at www. avalanchecity.com/

Also playing is Fast Crew alumni Dane Rumble, who has built on his early success with the hip hop crew with a number one solo album and several hit singles.

This event is free: to get on the guest list please email kiaora@spacific.net. Please note that performances are likely to be early in the evening, possibly from 7.30, so come down early.

From: 7pm to 11pm
At: The Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL

CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

Our thoughts go out to all the people affected by last week’s earthquake in Christchurch. We have been contacted by many people with regards to fundraising events, two of which are listed below. We are working on something for later in the year, which we hope to be able to announce soon.

If you cannot attend either of these events, or wish to donate anyways, the UK Red Cross has set up an appeal at www.redcross.org.uk/nzearthquake, which has the advantage of being Gift Aid registered, so, if eligible, please check the “UK Taxpayer” box so that they can claim 28% tax relief on your donation and this will be added to the fund. For those who are not UK taxpayers, you can donate to the NZ Government’s Earthquake Appeal, at www.christchurchearthquakeappeal.govt.nz/

COMPETITION :: THE NAKED AND FAMOUS TICKETS

The Naked and Famous are one of the hottest band’s in NZ right now – after bubbling away on the cult Round Trip Mars label for the last few years, they hit their stride this summer with their storming “Young Blood” track, which rocketed to the top of the NZ charts.

They are over these sides for a quick tour later this month, and we have been given a pair of tickets to their show at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen on Monday November 15th. The first person to email us at kiaora@spacific.net will win! For more tour info, tracks and videos, check out http://www.thenakedandfamous.com.

We have been given one copy to give away – just email us at kiaora@spacific.net and tell us the year that Phar Lap won the Melbourne Cup to go in to the draw on Wednesday 10th November to win. To find out more or to order copies of the diary, please visit www.thekiwidiary.co.nz.
