SEBRIGHT ARMS :: KERRETTA :: 11/04/2014

For our first show of 2014, we are happy to present the debut London performance by instrumental rock band, Kerretta.

Spawned in Auckland in mid 2005, the band started off as an experimental side project but after early shows built a loyal fanbase, they released their first single “Death In The Future” in 2007. Since then, they have birthed heavy new galaxies of audio expansiveness, performed on multiple continents, been compared to Mogwai and ISIS, plus released two albums, an EP and a handful of singles.

In their words: “When you march your barbarian horde through the streets of a fallen city, atop a fifteen hands high silver wildebeest, laser beams sparkling and shimmering over the smoking battlefields, a thousand million pearlescent snakes coiling slowly through the dead city streets, tiny unicorns cowering in their cages, Kerretta will be your soundtrack.” To see if you would agree, why not check them out on Soundcloud?

Their tour of Europe is to support the upcoming release of their third album on German label Golden Antenna.

Tickets are £6 +b/f from Music Glue.

From: 8pm
At: 31-35 Coate Street, E2 9AG
Nearest tube: Bethnal Green or Cambridge Heath

THE FORUM :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 12/04/14

Record-breaking New Zealand tours, scene-setting appearances at Glastonbury, Big Day Out and Parklife festivals, sold-out performances across Europe, collaborations with Symphony Orchestras, multiple music awards, four EPs and five LPs (three platinum) and an army of fans who return to relive their live experience time and time again: these are just some of the towering achievements of Shapeshifter, the future-shocked soul outfit from Christchurch.

Shapeshifter by name and by nature, this electronic soul outfit has morphed from depth-charge bass music to elastic electronic textures, barrelling breakbeats to bedrocks of soul and jazz. But never has their well-earned name been more apt than on their latest album, Delta, which is their most fearless release yet.

While the studio inputs have been tweaked, Delta’s ethos of experimentation is one that will be familiar to anyone who has chartered the group’s evolutions in sound. Like the mighty Twelve Mile Delta in the South Island of New Zealand, the album’s namesake, Delta marks a confluence of Shapeshifter’s influences – past and present.

BEDROOM BAR :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 24/10/13

Next week sees the return of one of New Zealand’s funkiest acts: Sola Rosa. Five albums in, and their sound just gets better and better, with the soundsystem show set to sizzle this autumn with a new line up and new tracks.

The musical brainchild of Andrew Spraggon, Sola Rosa takes on newcomer Sam Allen to play guitar and keys alongside Cherie Mathieson on vocals, creating a musical force like you’ve never heard before. Blending a sensational mix of hip hop, reggae, latin, jazz, funk and soul, Sola Rosa bring a new level of uniqueness to the ears of eager fans. For an idea, why not listen to or download this free mixtape on Soundcloud?

For this tour they’re planning to drop tracks never before played live as well as brand new tunes fresh out the studio door. DJing from 8pm will be Si the Knife (Rhombus), with Sola Rosa due onstage around 9.30pm.

If you fancy coming down earlier, next door to the Bedroom Bar, but part of the same building, is hip Korean joint, Jubo, who specialises in KFC … otherwise known as Korean Fried Chicken!

THE UNION CHAPEL :: DAVE DOBBYN & DON MCGLASHAN :: 06/12/13

Tickets sales have been unsurprisingly off the hook for this show, with more than half sold already.

Which was to be expected, given the high regard for Dave and Don as both solo acts and as members of The Mutton Birds, Th’ Dudes, Blam Blam Blam and DD Smash. Between them they are the authors of scores of iconic hits including Anchor Me, Dominion Road, White Valiant (Don / The Mutton Birds) and Loyal, Slice of Heaven, Welcome Home (Dave). Together they form a pairing that will be even greater than the sum of its parts.

The New Zealand leg of this tour has been received incredibly well, with great reviews in the Dominion Post and on the 13th Floor blog.

Advance tickets are £18 +b/f from Music Glue, Gigantic, Stargreen or Ticketweb. Please note it is an all seated show.

O2 EMPIRE :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 18/07/13

A week today, The Black Seeds roll into town for their only London show this year. They arrive fresh from rocking one of the biggest reggae festivals in Europe, Summerjam in Germany, and head off almost immediately to support Chase & Status and Skunk Anansie at the Serengetti Festival.

For the last 15 years, the boys have been rocking dancefloors across the globe with their soul charged reggae sounds. Along the way they have released 5 albums, toured the world too many times to count, had a track featured on ‘Breaking Bad’ and been hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as ‘the best reggae band on the planet right now’.

Last year they released their 5th studio album, “Dust and Dirt”, to critical acclaim, and swiftly followed that with a bevy of remixes, including choice cuts by DJ Vadim and Prince Fatty.

Support on the night comes from the amazing Samoan soulstress Iva Lamkum, whose rich syrupy voice has had MTV compare her to Amy Winehouse, and who some of you may know from the vocals she provided for the Sola Rosa hit ‘Turn Around’.

Advance tickets are £14.50 +b/f from Ticketweb (08444 771 000) or it will be £20 on the door.

THE GARAGE :: KATCHAFIRE :: 03/07/13

Katchafire have come a long way from their humble beginnings in 1997 as a covers band with a name inspired by The Wailers’ debut album “Catch a Fire”, to their current status as troubadours of the Pacific spirit and international ambassadors of Aotearoa reggae. Along the way they have had numerous successes, including a double platinum debut album “Revival”, 2003’s highest selling single ‘Giddy Up’ and platinum follow up albums “Slow Burning”, “Say What You’re Thinking” and “On The Road Again”.

Not content with being ‘World Famous in New Zealand’ however, they have spent the last 5 years building a fanbase in Hawaii and across the west coast of the United States, and have made themselves part of the staple diet in the Californian reggae scene.

2013 sees their first European release, a collection of their greatest tracks to date entitled “Best So Far”, which is coming out on June 17th via the legendary Jamaican label Greensleeves, and to celebrate the boys are over for a very quick tour.

A limited number of tickets are left available for this show, and can be bought for £12 +b/f from Ticketweb.co.uk (08444 771 000).

CD SALE

To celebrate both New Zealand Music Month and our 100th edition of Spacific News, we are offering a special deal on New Zealand music CDs for the whole month of May: anyone who buys a CD from our Discogs or Amazon store will get any other title of similar (or lower) value completely free.

The Amazon store is perhaps the easiest for most people to use, and can be found at http://tinyurl.com/amazonspacific. Once you have placed your order, please email us at kiaora@spacific.net with your free CD request.

The Discogs store has more titles, but is a bit more clunky. It can be found at http://tinyurl.com/discogsspacific. Please mention your free CD request when ordering (they thankfully provide a box for comments).

Please note we only have a limited number of some titles, so you may be better off buying something lesser known, and asking us for something more popular as your free CD. For example we have plenty of copies of the last Black Seeds, Minuit, Sola Rosa, Pitch Black, Kora, Ladi6 and Tiki Taane albums.

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH NZ ON AIR

It has only recently come to our attention that the lovely people at NZ On Air have been posting their Kiwi Hit Discs up online at SoundCloud and Spotify. If you don’t know of them, the Hit Discs are what NZ On Air send out to radio stations in NZ every month, to help programmers keep up to date with what is going on in NZ music. While they are perhaps a little commercially biased, they still provide an excellent opportunity to keep in touch with what is going on back in NZ.

To check them out, please go to either http://soundcloud.com/nzonairmusic or http://open.spotify.com/user/nzonairmusic.

O2 EMPIRE :: THE BLACK SEEDS :: 18/07/13

Hot on the heels of 2012’s studio release Dust and Dirt, New Zealand’s reggae-soul heavyweights The Black Seeds are set to return for another European summer.

Renowned globally for their epic live shows, last year saw the band play over 90 headline shows in 3 continents! In Europe, the Seeds played more shows than ever before, to over 13,000 fans in the month of April alone.

After the recent release of the deluxe version of Dust and Dirt, which featured re-workings from the likes of DJ Vadim and Prince Fatty, this summer’s shows promise to be the perfect follow up to 2012’s epic schedule.

Advance tickets for the show are £14.50 +b/f from Ticketweb.co.uk (08444 771 000) or from http://tinyurl.com/seedsempire

From: 7pm
At: Shepherd’s Bush Green, W12
Nearest tube: Shepherd’s Bush or Goldhawk Rd

DINGWALLS :: THE FEELERS :: 22/11/12

After a two-year absence, The Feelers are bringing their guitar-fueled brand of rock to the UK this November. Now into their third decade as one of New Zealand’s hardest working bands, The Feelers kick off their overseas tour at the Hard Rock Cafe in Singapore before heading over these ways.

Fans can expect to see the best live show yet from the band, who are promising a full throttle spectacle playing all the hits, old and new, such as Pressure Man, Venus, The Fear, Didn’t Want To Fall In Love, Blue Skies, Stand Up, Larger Than Life and Supersystem, to name just a few.

With 3 Silver Scroll awards for the most performed work on radio in New Zealand, 5 #1 albums, and twenty top 40 singles, a Feelers gig is like a trip down memory lane: summers spent on Pohutkawa lined beaches, New Year’s eve camping trips and impromptu backyard BBQ’s.

Support on the night comes from London based band Melic.

Tickets are £12 +b/f from Dingwalls.com (direct link http://tinyurl.com/feelers-uk)

Doors: 7pm
At: Dingwalls, Middle Yard, Camden Lock, NW1 8AB
Nearest tubes: Camden Town or Chalk Farm
