OSLO :: PITCH BLACK :: 07/07/16

One of the pioneers of New Zealand’s electronica scene, Pitch Black are celebrating the impending anniversary of their inaugural performance at The Gathering in Takaka back in 1996. They followed that gig by building up a live following around the country, often touring with Salmonella Dub, and then releasing their debut album ‘Futureproof’ in 1998.

Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds it all together. In their own words, they’ve “got one foot in trance, one foot in drum ‘n’ bass, one foot in ambient, one foot in cinema, one foot in live, one foot in studio”, which, as one critic pointed out, suggests that they might have more feet than most!

If you have never seen them play live, then you’re in for a treat as it is their live show that really makes Pitch Black stand out from the rest of the crowd, both sonically and visually. Their tracks take on an added dynamism and their performances reveal the dialectic behind the band – Paddy wants to do it for the crowd, Michael wants to do it to the crowd. Visually they are in another dimension due to the cutting edge visuals: check them out at Sandwiches, Wellington in 2011.

Advance tickets are £8 +b/f from alt-tickets or it will be £15 on the door.

From: 7.30pm

SEBRIGHT ARMS :: SHOCKING PINKS :: 07/10/15

An emotionally vulnerable highlight reel of scruffy Jesus and Mary Chain dream-pop, ecstatic My Bloody Valentine haze, droning C-86 confessionals, and bedroom New Order bass lines…His heartache, our pleasure.” (Pitchfork)

In early 2004, Christchurch, New Zealand’s Nick Harte releases “Dance the Dance Electric”, his first album as Shocking Pinks on a small part-time record label Pinacolada Records. Buzz about the record makes its way to the offices of Pitchfork in America, who issue a glowing review, still to this day one of their highest album reviews of any New Zealand artist ever. Describing the record as “cavorting from unabashed disco revivalism to scuzzed-out new-wave to reggae-tinged psychedelia in a mottled kaleidoscope of brazen idealism.”, the review gushed about the album, though one line would make a profound difference in Nick Hartes life.

At the end of the first paragraph, Pitchfork issue a bold statement stating that the album “far outshines most of the bilge spawned from James Murphy’s Chernobyl-like fallout.” In reference to the extremely popular, at the time, New York label DFA Records. Well, word of this spread to DFA and they, as you would expect, took a listen to the record, and eventually signed him to their roster and released his later material worldwide, gaining him significant profile in the process.

Ten years later, the cult “Dance the Dance Electric” will finally be available physically again, as well as digitally for the very first time, as it gets the full reissue treatment.

THE HOXTON BAR & KITCHEN :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 20/08/15

From his humble beginnings experimenting with a 4-track recorder at the tender age of 19, Sola Rosa frontman Andrew Spraggon has gone on to cultivate over 15 years of rich, well-crafted melodic beats. Weaving and infusing a rotating mix of hip-hop, jazz, reggae, latin, neo-soul and funk, before topping it with an icing of assorted and diverse vocalists, Sola Rosa have released six critically acclaimed long players to date.

The most recent being 2014’s Magnetics, a soulful dreamscape of sound featuring an eclectic assortment of fresh vocalists from across the globe and the winner of ‘Best Soul & R&B’ award in the heralded iTunes ‘Best of 2014’.

As Magnetics continues to receive critical acclaim in New Zealand, Sola Rosa now look across the seas towards an extensive Sound System tour of the UK and Europe this August to consolidate their growing popularity in these territories, helped by support from the likes of Huey Morgan (Radio 6), Jeremy Sole (KCRW, USA), DJ Ease (Nightmares on Wax) and Funkhaus Europa.

The Sound System show features The Streets co-vocalist Kevin Mark Trail.
