Fun, disarming and musically provocative, the Topp Twins are New Zealand’s finest lesbian country and western singers and the country’s greatest export since rack of lamb and the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

In the late 1990’s, the Topp’s created their own TV series, which ran for three seasons and showcased their popular cast of Kiwi characters, including Camp Mother, the Bowling Ladies and cross-dressing Ken and Ken. The series won the twins several awards at the NZ Film and TV Awards and has screened on ABC and Foxtel in Australia.

In 2008 the twins, who are out-and-proud lesbians, were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. Most recently their feature documentary film “The Topp Twins, Untouchable Girls” won Best Feature Film at the NZ Film & TV Awards (2009), as well as the Audience Award at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. It has since gone on to screen at more than 25 film festivals worldwide, winning a clutch of awards. The film has the honour of being the highest grossing documentary ever released in New Zealand.

VIBE LIVE :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 27/10/11

Since 1999, Sola Rosa’s Andrew Spraggon has been tantalising listeners with otherworldly aural experiences, honing his craft and taking Sola Rosa from a self-released one man project to a fully-fledged live powerhouse. He’s kept good company on the road and in the studio, with the Sola Rosa band counting members of Dimmer, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Goldenhorse, Pluto and Sommerset amongst the ranks over the years, not to mention tapping the talents of internationally renowned artists like Nathan Haines and Spikey Tee along the way.

His albums have gone from strength to strength, with the last release, “Get it Together” chalking up the number one spot on both iTunes NZ and the Independent NZ Music Album Chart (where it stayed for four months), and reaching number 15 on the NZ Album Chart – all on the way to achieving Gold status.

The album finally sees an international release this month through Germany’s Melting Pot Music and to celebrate Sola Rosa are making their first tour of Europe. Unfortunately economics prohibited bringing the whole band this time, but Andrew has crafted a special soundsystem set and drafted in not just veteran MC Spikey Tee (Jah Wobble, Mr Scruff, Bomb The Bass) but also the amazingly talented Lisa Tomlins (Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Ebb).

Support on the night comes from dubmeister International Observer.

VIBE LIVE :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 27/10/11

Since Andrew Spraggon’s first formative releases as Sola Rosa at the turn of the 21st century, he’s steadily built a reputation for his deft synthesis of styles and quiet disregard for the niceties of genre boundaries. With a catch-all sound encompassing the best of hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, all six of Sola Rosa’s critically acclaimed albums are a potent distillation of the music that’s influenced Spraggon over the course of his decade long career as a musician and producer. From a humble, self-released one man project to a decidedly deadly live collective, Sola Rosa has grown from a national treasure into an act of truly international repute.

For his first ever show in London, he will be joined by veteran MC Spikey Tee (Jah Wobble, Mr Scruff, Bomb The Bass) and vocalist Lisa Tomlins (Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Ebb).

Simon Rycroft from Rhombus will be playing a Rhombus in Dub set this weekend at Camden’s laidback Inspiral Lounge, and if that isn’t good news enough for you … the night is completely FREE.

Formed in 2002 by producers Koa Williams, Simon Rycroft and Thomas Voyce, Rhombus quickly became known as one of New Zealand’s premier exponents of the dub/bass/electronic genre, with the single “Clav Dub”, featuring Tiki, storming into the charts.

Having worked with over 20 vocalists and released four albums and 3 EP’s along the way, the past two years has seen the trio focus their attention on the Rhombus In Dub project, recording with international vocalists including Warrior Queen, Rodney P and Deadly Hunta. As such they have produced two limited-run CDs and the vinyl only “Bubble” EP.

This is a rare and exclusive opportunity to preview some of the group’s new material outside of New Zealand. Warm up comes from Strange Frequencies resident Nick Satta, spinning a diverse selection of some of the best old, new and future dub from around the world and beyond.

BUSH HALL :: DON MCGLASHAN :: 11/06/11

The amazing Mr McGlashan graces us once more with his stellar solo show. The former frontman of The Mutton Birds, Blam Blam Blam and The Front Lawn has had a tough year, having been hospitalized in April after a car door opened on him while cycling through Auckland.

Now fully recovered, and armed only with his guitar, euphonium and harmonica, his live show rollicks through the back catalogue as well as playing some of his newer (equally good) solo stuff, throwing in jokes and anecdotes along the way.

By the way, if his name doesn’t ring a bell, his songs surely will, with five entries in APRA New Zealand’s Top 100 Songs Of All Time: “Anchor Me”, “Dominion Road”, “Don’t Fight It Marsha, It’s Bigger Than Both Of Us”, “There is no Depression in New Zealand” and “Andy”. Plus you must have heard “Bathe in the River”, which Don wrote for Hollie Smith.

He is supported on this, his only European show this year, by the amazing Mostar Diving Club. Check them out at www.themostardivingclub.com/.

Tickets are on sale from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) for £10 +b/f or it will be £15 on the door.

From: 7.30pm til 11pm
At: 310 Uxbridge Road, London W12 7LJ

o2 EMPIRE :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 13/05/11

Heralded as a musical phenomenon, Shapeshifter’s unique blend of heavy soul and drum + bass is every bit as rugged and epic as the Kiwi landscape. Likened by one wag to Jonah Lomu on a D+B mission, their live show is second to none and guaranteed to knock you off your feet.

Having signed to UK label Hospital late last year, the boys have just released a selection of remixes of tracks from “The System is a Vampire” album, and are about to embark on recording their fifth studio album.

Joining them for this show is the first lady of NZ hip hop, Ladi6, with help from her right hand men, Parks and Julien Dyne.

Advance tickets are available for £17.50 + booking fee from Ticketweb.co.uk (08700 600 100) – direct link is http://tinyurl.com/49x6c2

VIBE LIVE :: AVALANCHE CITY & DANE RUMBLE :: 18/05/11

Last January we held our first showcase event organized in collaboration with the New Zealand Music Commission. This May, to coincide with The Great Escape festival in Brighton, we are happy to present our second event, with the additional support of Let The People Speak management, two of who’s artists are playing.

Avalanche City is the brainchild of Dave Baxter, who having completed his first album, made it available for free download on the internet. He was expecting only a few hundred copies to be downloaded, but after more than 10,000 downloads he took it offline, and began to market it. His debut single “Love Love Love” debuted at number one on the New Zealand charts, despite little radio play and the album subsequently soared into the charts as well. You can check him out at www. avalanchecity.com/

Also playing is Fast Crew alumni Dane Rumble, who has built on his early success with the hip hop crew with a number one solo album and several hit singles.

This event is free: to get on the guest list please email kiaora@spacific.net. Please note that performances are likely to be early in the evening, possibly from 7.30, so come down early.

From: 7pm to 11pm
At: The Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, E1 6QL
Nearest Tubes: Aldgate East or Liverpool St
Venue website: www.vibe-bar.co.uk/
