THE HOXTON BAR & KITCHEN :: SOLA ROSA SOUNDSYSTEM :: 20/08/15

From his humble beginnings experimenting with a 4-track recorder at the tender age of 19, Sola Rosa frontman Andrew Spraggon has gone on to cultivate over 15 years of rich, well-crafted melodic beats. Weaving and infusing a rotating mix of hip-hop, jazz, reggae, latin, neo-soul and funk, before topping it with an icing of assorted and diverse vocalists, Sola Rosa have released six critically acclaimed long players to date. The most recent being 2014’s Magnetics, a soulful dreamscape of sound featuring an eclectic assortment of fresh vocalists from across the globe and the winner of ‘Best Soul & R&B’ award in the heralded iTunes ‘Best of 2014’.

BUSH HALL :: TRINITY ROOTS :: 27/01/15

More than 10 years after their last UK performance, we are super stoked to announce the return of the amazing Trinity Roots, with support from Thomas Oliver.

Following on from their self-titled EP in 2001, TrinityRoots expanded their palette of sounds on two long players, True (2002) and Home, Land and Sea (2004), releases that were rewarded with platinum sales, setting the stage for other home grown independent successes that followed. And then, they left us in 2005 to pursue new projects, taking their individual energies to groups like Little Bushman, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Breaks Co-op and Eru Dangerspiel.

2010 saw a resurgence of TrinityRoots with the release of their Music Is Choice live CD and DVD package as well as the band reformation. The openness and honesty contained within that last release – musically and personally – illustrates exactly why Trinity are so special to so many people.

Since reforming in 2010 there have been sold out tours within NZ, shows with Fat Freddys Drop & Ladi6, festival performances at WOMAD NZ, Homegrown, Rippon Open Air & Coromandel Gold all topped off with their Australian debut, being a main stage performance at the prestigious Byron Bay Blues Festival in Australia plus two sold out performances in Melbourne and Sydney and a set at the Natural NZ Music Festival in Perth.

Now, buoyed by seemingly boundless renewed energies flowing around the band, TrinityRoots have recruited a new cornerstone – drummer/vocalist Ben Lemi. A multi-instrumentalist composer from Wellington, Ben has been contributing to the NZ music scene for the last 10 years. A Jazz Performance graduate of the NZ School of Music, he became involved with various local bands and as a guitarist/drummer/bass player and singer, he has recorded and performed with various NZ acts across the country and internationally. More recently he has been working with Amiria Grenell, Newtown Rocksteady, Rhombus and French For Rabbits and now, TrinityRoots…these three together in TrinityRoots now, truly are brothers-in-musical-arms.

“As an artist I feel honoured to help carry this momentum that has been so positively built up and supported over the years. This new chapter for Trinity is being written beat by beat and note by note, so at this point I’m just really looking forward to the challenges.” Ben Lemi.

TrinityRoots, are about to head into famed Wellington recording outlet – Surgery Studios. At the helm is famed recording engineer & producer Lee (Doc) Prebble, to push record on what will be their 3rd studio album, due for release in 2015.

Advance tickets are £15 + b/f from Music Glue, Sanza, Gigantic, Stargreen or Ticketweb

BUSH HALL :: ANIKA MOA :: 30/10/14

At the age of 19, Anika Moa pulled off quite a coup, getting signed direct to a major US label before she had released anything at all in New Zealand. She was going to be a pop star – that’s what Atlantic Records had in mind – so you can only imagine how perplexed they were when she insisted on playing her own brand of acoustic folk-pop songs. Anika returned home with a promise to make music her way and has thankfully stuck to that path, become one of the most iconic musicians in Aotearoa along the way.

As well as releasing four solo records, Anika has recorded an album for children, ‘Songs for Bubbas’, and collaborated with many artists including SJD, Bic Runga, Dimmer, Julia Deans and, more recently, Boh Runga and Hollie Smith for the ‘Anika, Boh and Hollie’ project.

This year, she is working on the recording of her fifth studio album, honing her already considerable Twitter skills and returning to London to play her first solo show here in 8 years.

If you haven’t seen her live before, she combines captivating pop songs with a unique flair for storytelling, displaying an irreverent sense of humour often missing in modern musicians.

She is currently auditioning for a support act – watch this video for more infomation Tongue out

THE HOXTON BAR AND KITCHEN :: TIKI TAANE & JAYSON NORRIS :: 30/07/14

Two guys, two guitars, crazy good vocals and a blend of soul, roots and rock – you’d struggle to find two more talented guys. Tiki’s obviously a household name back in New Zealand while Jayson’s been building his London repuation for the last 10 years, with his shows at The Chatsworth, Vesbar and Homelanz. On their own they’ll own any crowd, together they’re out of this world.

BEDROOM BAR :: LADI6 :: 26/06/14

We are very happy to welcome Ladi and her band back after far too loooooong an absence.

She comes fresh from releasing her third album, ‘Automatic’, to great acclaim. Produced by Parks alongside Detroit legend, Waajeed, the album was recorded at both Studio A in Detroit and Revolver Studios in Waiuku and has been hailed by critics as her strongest statement to date: ” … crafted with impeccable taste, somehow both inventively crunchy and raw, and like a beautiful tonic for your ears in the same instant.”

Ladi6 is well known on the Australasian and European festival circuit where she has performed at The Big Chill and Glastonbury as well as supported musical heroes including Gil Scott Heron and Erykah Badu. These shows received rave reviews, with the
European media saying she was “one to watch” and “stratospherically good.”

SEBRIGHT ARMS :: KERRETTA :: 11/04/2014

According to the band, “When you march your barbarian horde through the streets of a fallen city, atop a fifteen hands high silver wildebeest, laser beams sparkling and shimmering over the smoking battlefields, a thousand million pearlescent snakes coiling slowly through the dead city streets, tiny unicorns cowering in their cages, Kerretta will be your soundtrack.”!

A loose mix of instrumental experimental post-rock, dashes of electrical weirdness and a few healthy riffs, Kerretta have gathered a relatively varied CV. They’ve shared stages with The Breeders, Poison Arrows, Explosions In The Sky, Mono, ‘Trail Of Dead, This Will Destroy You, Sleepy Sun and Narrows, and guitarist David Holmes produced all of the previous three Jakob LP’s.

While this is their third tour of Europe, arranged to promote the release of a new single (out March 21) and their third album (out later this year), this gig will be their first ever performance in the UK. So, if you’re a mild fan of anything heavy and weird from Mastodon to Battles, Mogwai to Churn-era Shihad, grab tickets to their only London performance.

Supporting them on the night will be UpCDownC from Kent.

Tickets are £6 +b/f from Music Glue or it will be £10 on the door.

From: 8pm
At: 31-35 Coate Street, E2 9AG

THE FORUM :: SHAPESHIFTER :: 12/04/14

Record-breaking New Zealand tours, scene-setting appearances at Glastonbury, Big Day Out and Parklife festivals, sold-out performances across Europe, collaborations with Symphony Orchestras, multiple music awards, four EPs and five LPs (three platinum) and an army of fans who return to relive their live experience time and time again: these are just some of the towering achievements of Shapeshifter, the future-shocked soul outfit from Christchurch.

Shapeshifter by name and by nature, this electronic soul outfit has morphed from depth-charge bass music to elastic electronic textures, barrelling breakbeats to bedrocks of soul and jazz. But never has their well-earned name been more apt than on their latest album, Delta, which is their most fearless release yet.

While the studio inputs have been tweaked, Delta’s ethos of experimentation is one that will be familiar to anyone who has chartered the group’s evolutions in sound. Like the mighty Twelve Mile Delta in the South Island of New Zealand, the album’s namesake, Delta marks a confluence of Shapeshifter’s influences – past and present.

Downstairs has sold out and there are now only limited numbers of tickets left for upstairs. These are available for £17.50 +b/f from Ticketmaster (08444 999 999).

Doors: 7pm
At: 9-17 Highgate Road, London, NW5 1JY
